Snyder Park Elementary
November 2023 Wildcat Newsletter
Message from Principal Sledge
During the Fall season, we are reminded to be thankful. This season I am thankful for all of our staff, parents, and students that make Snyder Park amazing.
I am also thankful for the implementation of Leader In Me within our district. For the month of November, we have been focusing on Habit 2, Begin With the End in Mind. As I think about the end of our school year, I would like to see all of our students meeting their own personal and educational goals. With the support of our community, district, staff, parents, and students; we are well on our way to accomplishing this!
We now have the results of our Acadience and I-ready test scores from the beginning of the year, which will help us in measuring our student's growth as we proceed throughout the school year. Parents please continue to be supportive of your student's educational experience by talking to them daily about school and reaching out to their teachers regularly. Remember that every victory, no matter the size, is something to be thankful for!
-Walter Sledge, Principal
Important Reminders
- If your student will be absent, please call the main office at 937-505-4430 to communicate the reason for the absence. - Please be mindful of our buses and students walking in the morning. During dismissal the turnaround is off limits due to the buses.
- If your student is a walker, please talk with them about the importance of walking on the sidewalks at all times. Some students are walking through our parking lots, which is not safe.
- The weather is getting cooler, please make sure your students are dressed appropriately and following our dress code.
- We are experiencing students not following cell phone policy. Cell phones should be turned off and not seen. First warning, the Principal may confiscate and hold it until the end of the day. Leader In Me at Home
Leader In Me Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind
Begin With the End in Mind means to think about how you would like something to turn out before you get started. Reading a recipe before cooking or looking at a map before leaving on a trip is beginning with the end in mind. For young children, a good example is that of a jigsaw puzzle. Before doing a puzzle, they look at the cover of the box. They start with the end in mind.
Family Mission Statement: A family mission statement is like a constitution your family lives by that helps you all make decisions for your life. It represents the purpose and values of your family, and will allow you to shape your future according to the principles you as a family hold most dear, rather than letting other people or circumstances determine it. Mission statements take many forms. Some are long and some are short. They may take form as a saying or phrase, a picture, a poem, or even a song. Make it personal to your family.
Get started by following these steps:
1. Discuss the following questions with your family:
- What does our family want to be known for?
- How do we treat each other?
- What unique contributions can we make?
- What big goals do we want to achieve?
- What unique talents and skills do we have?
3. Begin crafting your statement, but remember, it doesn't have to be finished in one sitting. It can be a work in progress until you are all happy with the outcome.
4. Post the statement prominently in your home and encourage the entire family to consider it when making decisions or having disputes.
Examples:
- We want to be the kind of family our dog already thinks we are.
- No empty chairs.
Some other activities you can do with your child are:
1. Habit 2 provides a good base for activities around goal setting. As a family (or with an individual child), choose an area that needs improvement. The area of improvement, or the broad goal, becomes your end in mind. Then think of specific steps that will lead to achieving this goal. For example, if the goal is to improve as a reader, specific steps may include reading a certain amount of time every day or working several times a week to improve oral fluency.
2. Ask your child if there is something special he or she would like to buy, then help your child plan how much money he or she will need to save and how long it will take. Discuss ideas for earning extra money like doing additional chores and helping around the house.

W.I.G. (Wildly Important Goal)
Leader in Me has encouraged all Springfield City Schools to identify a W.I.G. (Wildly Important Goal). Our W.I.G at Snyder Park is; Starting September 2023, by incorporating the 7 Habits, 70% of Snyder Park students will have met their typical or stretch growth target on the Acadience and/or i-Ready reading assessments by May 2024. WE CAN DO IT!
P.B.I.S.
Students receive PBIS points for being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe. Students also receive PBIS points for attendance. Each month, classroom time is set aside for students to shop our online PBIS store where they are able to use their points to purchase items of their choice. Some items include bouncy balls, spinning bracelets, cotton candy, extra recess, high fives with Mr. Holliday, and fine dining. Our fine dining has received a 10/10 rating from our fourth grade students!
For the month of October, our attendance data shows that we have the most absences on Monday's and Friday's. Please encourage your student to attend school each day and to be here on time. We are currently working on attendance incentives that will encourage our students to be here each day!
Counselor's Corner
November: Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
This month many of our conversations about goal setting have begun by having students examine their Personal Values. We are more likely to achieve goals that reflect what is important to us. Our 6th grade discussions involved responses to specific prompts and here were some of their responses:
What is the one thing I would change in my community?
Changing people’s views on things. –Kylie S.
What is a word I hope my friends would use to describe me?
Accountable, having integrity and perseverance. – Jameer T.
What would I buy if I suddenly had $500 that I needed to spend in the next 24 hours?
I would buy what my parents wanted and what one of my friends wanted. – Aubrey S.
What is a goal I would like to accomplish in my life?
Go to Michigan University and become a therapist. –Cole D.
If I had a free day how would I spend it?
I would visit my brothers and step-mom and go to my friends' houses. Kailynn S.
What is a goal I would like to accomplish in my life?
To make it to the NHL. –Cameron B.
What is a goal I would like to accomplish in my life?
End world hunger. – Jonathan B.
I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to see many of our students grow up over the past several years. These were just a few examples of how kind and caring our kids can be and I trust if they allow their values to guide their decisions they will grow up to accomplish their goals.

Cat Council Updates
On October 18th, 2023 the Cat Council worked on creating the soil for the garden. We started by laying down cardboard to cover the grass. We added mulch on top so that it would break down the soil and decompose over the winter. Students measured the area of the garden and calculated the amount of mulch they needed. C & S Tree Services donated the mulch and delivered it to our school. Many of the students thought seeing the mulch get dumped was cool.
After the mulch got put down, the students began grabbing tools and began evenly spreading out the mulch. Tools were borrowed from Mrs. Snyder, Mr. Robinson and Ms. Oakes was able to reserve a community trailer full of tools from Waste Management. We were able to get most of it spread that afternoon and recently completed the rest. We will post signs to show people what we are doing. During winter months we will be researching the best native plants to grow in our garden.

Snyder Park is Out and About
Fourth grade took a trip to the Advance One Room Schoolhouse to simulate what it would have been like to go to school in 1878. They completed 7 lessons from different textbooks, played with wooden toys and ropes for recess, and learned popular songs and dances from the 1800's. They had a blast from the past!
