DEAR FARMINGTON VIEW FAMILIES
Next week, our school will conduct an Earthquake drill. We cannot share the exact date and time of the drill. The purpose of an earthquake drill is to practice the response to an earthquake in our area. The drill will be initiated by a PA announcement that we are practicing an earthquake drill and shaking has started. Staff will prepare students for the drill and support individual students as needed. Students will be prompted to DROP, COVER and HOLD on until the “shaking” has stopped. Classes that are outside of the school will be instructed to move away from buildings, trees, and powerlines and then get low to the ground covering their head with their arms. Once the “shaking” has stopped staff and students will exit the building and normal evacuation procedures will be followed. Once all students have been accounted for the drill will end and students will return to class. Learn more about safety drills and the Standard Response Protocol on our website. If you have any questions, please contact me at Natasha Echeverria @ 503-844-1735.

October Family STEAM Challenge
If intersted in Particpating in the FAMILY October STEAM Challenge please look for the packet that will be coming home! You will be able to use the QR code to send pictures of the work you do as a family! We will be posting these in our building and on our websites!
Family challenges are a fun, optional activity for our families at Farmington View. They will be available each month. If you choose to participate, find a day to complete the challenge with your family. As you complete the challenge, fill out this paper. Once you have completed the challenge and filled out the paper, turn it into the office. On the last day of the challenge, we will randomly draw 1 paper. These families will earn a STEAM related prize. Students will receive their prize the following Monday.
For our first challenge, we will be using the scientific method. In the scientific method, a scientist will form a hypothesis about a given problem and the hypothesis is tested with an experiment. The scientific method is all about studying and learning things right around you.
Your Mission: Your family will use the scientific method to investigate which liquid will dissolve candy corn the fastest.
Dependent Variable: The time it takes to dissolve the candy
Independent Variable: The type of liquid
Supplies:
Candy Corn
Need some candy corn? Visit the office to grab a bag of candy corn to use for your experiment!
3-4 Different Liquids
You could use water, vinegar, oil, seltzer, lemon juice, soda, or anything else!
We recommend water and oil

Timer

Healthy Snacks
We highly encourage healthy snacks for student snack time. Students get to take a snack to their first recess. This is a time for them to re-energize and re-fuel themselves.
Water bottles should only contain water. No juice, coffee, energy drinks, etc. We want to make sure that students are minimizing their sugar intake during the school day in order to promote a better opportunity for learning.
Make sure to send plastic or metal water bottles. No glass, as when dropped it breaks and can be dangerous.
We are focusing on teaching self-management skills
