VOGELTOWN SCHOOL TE KURA O HUATOKI
WEEK 4, TERM 2, 2025.
FROM RYVES...ACKNOWLEDGING OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Kia ora koutou parents and whānau,
As this is a Board of Trustees election year, I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our current Board members – Paul Gibbins, Mike Miners, Steve Venables, Hemi Coates and Aleisha Vickers.
The Board plays a vital role in the success of our school, through making important decisions with one clear goal in mind – to improve outcomes for all our students.
I have appreciated their support and guidance across a wide range of areas, including finance, property, staffing and learning initiatives. Most recently, their input has been crucial in refining our annual plan, helping us sharpen our focus on both learning and belonging.
A special thank you to Paul Gibbins for his dedication as Board Chairperson. His thoughtful leadership, availability, and the valuable perspectives he brings to our discussions have made a real difference.
Ngā mihi nui.
TEACHER ONLY DAY
This is to remind you that we will be holding a Teacher Only Day on Friday 30th May. On this day, school will be closed for instruction. Please note: the following Monday is King’s Birthday.
The focus of this day is for our teaching team to continue deepening their understanding of the new national curriculum refresh, including how it will shape teaching and learning within our school. This learning is important to ensure we are well prepared to deliver a curriculum that meets the needs of our learners.
We appreciate your support in making this time available for staff.
STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION TO SUPPORT SCHOOLS WITH REPORTING
As part of our focus on lifting student achievement we have introduced a new, knowledge-rich and internationally-comparable curriculum this year for Maths in Years 0–8 and English in Years 0–6, and Te Reo Rangatira Years 0-6 and Pāngarau Years 0-8 wāhanga ako.
This means we are currently changing from the old to the new curriculum. We want to acknowledge that schools and kura will only have been using the new curricula from the start of 2025, which includes new teaching and assessment methods and content.
This means you could see a change in your child’s progress or achievement compared to previous years, which may be the result of changes in the curriculum expectations for your child’s year level. If you have concerns or questions about your child’s achievement, we strongly suggest you talk with your child’s teacher or kaiako. They will also have used their own observations, classroom tasks and other tests to report on the progress your child is making.
OUR SCHOOL REPORT TIMELINE
You may have noticed some changes to the way we are reporting to parents. This year we concluded Term 1 with learning conferences, where teachers met with parents and whānau.
This term the changes continue, with teachers busy writing reports using a different format that aligns with the new curriculum and updated teaching expectations. To support them with this change, we are providing additional time for the preparation of these. As a result, all written reports will be sent home in the first week of Term 3.
This extension allows more time for drafting, moderating and ensuring consistency across the school. We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to strengthen our reporting processes.
NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS DAY
Every year, thousands of students and teachers from across Aotearoa attend the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD), and last week it was the turn of our class representatives. It was an exciting day out, beginning with a very early 5:30am departure and a breakfast stop in Whanganui at McDonald's!
This year marked a special milestone as NYLD celebrated 25 years of inspiring young leaders, with the empowering theme “Stronger Together.”
Throughout the day, students were treated to motivational talks, videos, music, interactive activities, and Q&A sessions with an impressive lineup of New Zealand leaders. The speaking team included Julia Grace – Mental Health First Aid Instructor, Georgia Lines – Musician, Jase Te Patu – Hauora Aotearoa, and Elisa Harley – CEO of Enivo Pots.
We were incredibly proud of how our students conducted themselves throughout the day. They were a breeze to travel with, eagerly took notes in their booklets, participated enthusiastically in the brain-break activities, and offered thoughtful words of thanks to finish the day.
A huge thank you to Matt Goodwin for getting everyone there and back safely!
On Young Leaders Day:NYLD, the class reps had to get to Vogeltown School at 5:00am to start their adventure to Palmerston North. We went to McDonalds at 8:00am for breakfast. We ate scrumptious food, even including DOUGHNUTS!!! Then we carried on our road trip to Palmerston North. When we got there we could hear music coming out of the ginormous speakers. We were surrounded by lots of other schools! The first speaker was Julia Grace who loves jelly. She talked about mental health and being kind to your mind!!! The second speaker was Jase Te Patu who talked about Hauora Aotearoa and breathing!!!!! The third speaker was Elisa Harley who talked about how to make a business and never give up!!!! The fourth speaker was Jari Jacobs who talked about being bullied and to always follow your dreams. Georgia Lines is a singer and pianist who is famous for her music in New Zealand!! Then we had a boring ride back!!!!!!!!
