Meme Intervention Activity

This intervention activity requires students to create memes based on historical concepts chosen by the teacher. When students are able to inject humor into their explanation of historical concepts it shows a deeper understanding. There are many free meme generators that you can use. Click the meme to go to a free meme generator.

Mind Map

This activity requires you to have a group of 10 students or more. The teacher will write down important concepts, facts, dates, or persons on index cards - one per card. The students will stand in a circle, and the teacher will ask one student to volunteer to say and explain their card. The teacher will clarify if necessary. Then, the teacher will ask if anyone has a card that could possibly connect with that first card, and the student will explain their thinking of why they connect. The first and second students will place their cards on the ground in front of them in the circle, and the teacher will use painters tape to connect a line from the first card to the second. This process will continue until all cards are on the ground and connected.

Mandela Effect

This intervention activity is based on the conspiracy theory known as the Mandela Effect. The Mandela Effect refers to a situation in which a large mass of people believes that an event occurred when it did not. The term was originated in 2009 by Fiona Broome after she discovered that she, along with a number of others, believed that Nelson Mandela had died in the 1980s (when he actually died in 2013). This brings about the idea of the multiverse and alternate timelines. Have students take points in history and rewrite them with different outcomes. You can then have students debate how changing one point in history would affect another. A good idea would be to have students create alternate timelines as a visual representation.

STAAR Practice Test (To include new item types)

Please make sure that if you have not already taken the practice test that you do so. This will help give you the perspective the students will have. The test can be found at www.texasassessment.gov

TFAR (Texas Formative Assessment Resource)

This website is a resource for you to create new question item types. This is the same system that STAAR questions are built from. The goal is to have a work group in the system for 6th, 7th, 8th, and 11th (U.S.) grades where teachers can contribute questions to a bank that everyone can pull from. The team leads were trained on how to login and create new items. You can also go to www.texasassessment.gov and click on the LMS (Learning Management System) tab to access online modules. From there you will click the course link and that will bring you to a place where you can learn about the website at your own pace. I will post a picture of the button you are supposed to click. Mrs. McClish also created an easy to follow video on how to create, share and publish items. Multi-Select Question - TFAR.mp4

Summer has also created a step through guide on how to create, share and publish items. Links to those documents provided below.

Bridge day guide

In an effort to reduce cheating amongst students and campuses on the Common Unit Assessments, we will not enable students to view their correct and incorrect responses in Eduphoria. This includes during bridge week, since not all campuses test at the exact same time.

However, we recognize that teachers may like to review the test questions with students as part of their bridge week protocols so that students may examine the questions they missed without the correct answer displayed. If this is something you would like to do, you can follow the directions included in the attachment below to print student test summary reports and display questions and answer choices for your students/class to examine or discuss.

Lowman Product

As you remember, we had Lowman Education come out and present. While we loved their free resources of the frequency charts and the framework, I heard a resounding desire from all of you to purchase more. When looking at what product could give us the biggest bang for our buck, I decided that the warm-ups and the assignments would be the best decision. These products were purchased and a big shout out to Dr. Buckley for pushing it through!

Who can use the products?

Lowman only has their products available for 6th, 7th, 8th and 11th (U.S.) grades.

How do we accesses the products?

Go to LOWMANEDUCATION.COM

CLICK ACCESS PRODUCTS

CREATE ACCOUNT (claim campus)

LOGIN WITH EMAIL AND PASSWORD

DOWNLOAD ANY ITEMS LABELED "OPEN"

Now most of you will already have a login because you created one during Job-alike.

Why should I use the product?

Lowman has created these warmups and assignments based off the frequency of tested TEKS. They also have new question item types. However, these resources are not interactive. For example, students would not actually drag and drop an item on the drag and drop questions. These products are available to you through word and PDF, so they do not have interactive quality. However, they do explicitly explain to the student what question type it is. If you would like to make them interactive, you could take those questions and plug them into Schoology or TFAR. I believe the purpose is the same because we want to focus on the skill of how these new question types are tested.

If you have any questions please let me know.

SOS Instructional Strategy from Discovery Ed

They Said What?

BIG IDEA

Students create logical dialogue among characters within a piece of Discovery Education media to demonstrate an understanding of the content. Students must use supporting evidence from their unit of study to make their inferences.

This strategy requires students to demonstrate understanding of the content by providing context for an image.

STEPS

1. Select an image (with at least two characters) related to your current unit of study.

2. Display the image to students and have them think about what they see, know, and wonder about the image.

3. Explain that they will be inferring what the characters may have said to each other, or thought to themselves, about what was happening.

4. Provide time for students to create and fill in dialogue, or thought bubbles, for the characters in the image.

5. Have students share their work in small groups, looking for similarities and differences.

6. Have each group select what they think is the best dialogue representation and share it with the whole class.

Recall Tasks for Active Retrieval

Recall Tasks for Active Retrieval

Recall tasks are an effective way to boost learning and memory. These tasks involve recalling information without the use of any cues or help. Instead, students are required to retrieve the information from their own memory. This process of active retrieval is crucial for embedding information in long-term memory and promoting deeper understanding of the material.

Mix Iron Chef Into Reading and Writing

Mix Iron Chef Into Reading and Writing

Students in my 11th grade US History class typically read four non-fiction books in addition to their History textbook. I have noticed that their note-taking skills, attention to detail, and recall of historical figures in the text need to improve. As students advance through upper-division work text complexity increases, yet the amount of reading instruction...

8th Grade Intervention

A Schoology course has been created to help spiral high frequency TEKS and concepts to our 8th grade students. There will be one lesson a week posted in Schoology to be delivered through the intervention period. The goal is for the lesson to last no longer than 20 minutes and be completed without the need of a content expert. If you are interested in helping contribute to this effort, please contact me for more information.
