SAMS VALLEY ELEMENTARY NEWS
#HAWKSSOAR
Letter from the Principal
As we are heading into our Thanksgiving Break, I am reminded of things I am truly grateful for. First off, I am grateful for health. It's so nice to be at school feeling good and seeing people's smiles! Secondly, I am grateful for my work environment. Staff and students at SVE are kind, gracious, helpful and happy. And finally, I am super thankful for my family...both my immediate family and my SVE family! In addition, I am incredibly grateful to be a principal in a community where people support one another. The Sams Valley Community is THE BEST!
On another note, parent teacher conferences are coming up next week. I would like to encourage you to prioritize meeting with your child's teacher. It is an excellent opportunity for you to learn exactly what your child is doing at school and have a face to face conversation with the person who spends a great deal of their day with your child. All teachers should have reached out to you by now and offered a sign up opportunity to get your conference scheduled.
I wish you a blessed Thanksgiving season!
Sincerely,
Tammie Collom
Principal, SVE

Spread Your Wings Wednesdays--Session 1
Spread Your Wings is a program we have at SVE that happens 4 times per school year. We do SYW courses on Wednesdays for 1 hour, four weeks in a row. Each session allows us to offer enrichment courses for students, so students get the opportunity to learn a new skill or develop their basic skills. Additionally, each SYW course allows us to build our school culture by mixing students up across grade levels and get students connected to staff members they might not already engage with on a daily basis. Spread Your Wings is something our students and staff really look forward to and enjoy!
Here are some of the pictures from our first session of Spread Your Wings........

A note from Nurse Angie
Hello great families of Sams Valley Elementary School!
Now that school is settling into the new year, the school illnesses are taking over. Please talk to your kids about not sharing food or drinks to help stop the spread of the many viruses circulating in our community. Also, a discussion of hand washing before eating and after using the bathroom would be a great idea.
Here are some guidelines sent out by the Oregon Department of Education for keeping kids home when they are sick. Listed are the most common illnesses. Please remember it is also important to have the discussion with your kids that they don’t have to feel 100% perfect to go to school. Sometimes a 70% day is still a productive day. Remind them they can do hard things and better days are coming.
Fever is a temperature of 100.4---Student must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of medication
New cough illness---Student can come back when the symptoms are improving for 24 hours and the cough is well controlled, or they don’t have a cough anymore.
Difficulty breathing---Student can come back when symptoms are improving for 24 hours.
Diarrhea—Student must stay home if they have 3 loose watery stools in a day or cannot control their bowel movements.
Vomiting---Student must stay home if they have one or more episodes that is unexplained.
Open Sores---Student can return when rash is gone OR sores are dry and can be completely covered with a bandaid OR with a provider note.
Red Eyes with Colored Drainage---Students can return when symptom free which means redness or drainage gone OR a note from a provider.
If your child does become sick and needs a provider visit, we do have the capability for a Telehealth visit right from your school health room. You will be invited to attend in person if possible, or through your cell phone via face time if you wish. To learn more about the Telehealth system, you can visit:
