CLEAR BAG POLICY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR 2026-2027
Parents and Students,
Continuing this year, students will only be permitted to carry backpacks made of clear plastic, vinyl, or similar transparent materials. Backpacks with colored elements, stripes, colored straps, mesh pockets, or leather-reinforced corners are allowed as long as they do not obstruct visibility.
As more schools move to this policy, finding clear backpacks is usually easy. Clear bags are available at local retailers or online. Here are some links you may find helpful:
ACADEMY SPORTS
Only clear bookbags and bags will be allowed into all our athletic events. They will be subject to a search prior to entering the event.
We understand there will be many questions. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.
Question: Will small gym/cinch bags, which are not clear, be allowed on campus?
Answer: No, all gym or cinch bags must comply with the NHS clear bag policy. There are various places to purchase these online.
Question: Will team athletic bags or instrument cases be allowed on campus?
Answer: Any sport-specific bag or musical instrument case must be dropped off in a designated location (coach's classroom, AD office, band room, etc.) prior to the first period bell. The coaches and teachers will tell individual team members where to drop their bags off.
Question: Are transparent or translucent colored backpacks allowed?
Answer: No. Colored transparent or translucent backpacks are not allowed. Only fully clear backpacks.
Question: Can the backpack have colored straps?
Answer: Yes. The backpack may have colored straps.
Question: Are company or trademarked logos allowed on the front of the backpacks?
Answer: Small logos are allowed, but large logos, monograms, or other visual design obstructions are not.
Question: Can students design or decorate the backpack?
Answer: Designs or decorations cannot hinder the ability to see inside the backpack.
Question: Are lunch boxes permitted?
Answer: Yes. Small non-clear lunch boxes are permitted to be carried within the backpacks. Any lunch container that cannot be carried inside the backpack will not be permitted unless clear.
Question: What about medically necessary items?
Answer: Exceptions will be granted for medically necessary items. See the school nurse.
Question: What about purses or pocketbooks?
Answer: Any purse or pocketbook that cannot be carried inside the backpack will not be permitted unless clear.
Question: What about a place to keep personal items (feminine hygiene products, etc.)?
Answer: Students will be permitted to carry personal items in a small makeup pouch/pencil pouch within the backpack.
Question: What items are prohibited?
Answer: Prohibited items include primarily mesh backpacks, purses, coolers, briefcases, fanny packs, non-clear cinch bags, luggage of any kind, computer bags, and camera bags.
Cell Phone/Device Policy
Prohibition of Wireless Communication Devices is NC State Law
Except in rare circumstances, the law prohibits students from using, displaying, or having a wireless communication device turned on during instructional time.
OCS is committed to providing a safe and productive learning environment for all our students. In recent years, we have seen an increase in the use of cell phones by students during school hours. While cell phones can be a valuable tool for learning, we have found that their use can also be a distraction and a source of conflict.
To address these concerns and as part of the ongoing review of the district’s policies, in February 2023 the Board of Education updated the district’s cell phone policy (Policy Code 4318: Use of Wireless Communication Devices).
Continuing in the 2026-2027 school year, students are permitted to have cell phones and other wireless communication devices on campus, so long as the devices are not activated, used, displayed, or visible during the instructional day or as otherwise directed by school rules or school personnel.

Parking Registration for All Students
Remaining parking spaces will be available to all eligible students beginning August 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
To request a parking space, students must provide:
- A completed parking pass application
- A copy of the vehicle registration
- A copy of the student’s valid driver’s license
- Proof of insurance
- Payment of all current and past-due school fees
Once the application is approved, the $25 OCS parking fee will be added to the student’s SchoolCash Online account. Students who do not complete the process within 48 hours will forfeit their requested space.

Students wishing to paint their spaces must submit a completed parking application and a color copy of their proposed design to the administration by July 30 for approval. Once approved, the additional $25 painting fee will be added to the student’s SchoolCash Online account. Painting may not begin until all fees have been paid and the student has picked up the official parking tag.
All required forms will be available in the Northside High School office beginning July 6.

We need you!
Northside High is seeking interested parents and guardians to serve on the school's improvement team. Interested parties should self-nominate using this form: https://forms.office.com/r/VKDWaZLU5T.
All submitted names will be voted on and selected by a group of parent/guardian representatives.
The School Improvement Team (SIT) is comprised of parents/guardians, administrators, certified staff and classified staff.
If selected, you will be listed as a member on the school's official strategic plan. Members help to write goals, performance indicators, and supporting activities to be the driving force behind school improvement. The full team meets once per month. There is a second meeting each month of the AVID Site Team which operates along with the SIT team. Parent members aren't required to attend every meeting, but are encouraged to participate as often as possible.
