Lambs LedgerMarch 2023

Message from the Principal, Jamie McCarthy

We are celebrating Read Across America this month! Mrs. Smith, our librarian has done an outstanding creating authentic experiences for our students. Together we are reading The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. The book fair will be open, we have daily themes, host our Reading Tile Night! READING IS FOR EVERYONE!

Attendance is extremely important. Of course we don't want students to attend when they are sick, however I ask that you make every effort to have your child present at school everyday. If you student is unable to attend, it is imperative that you provide documentation to Ms. Campbell in the front office. She is the attendance guru and is willing to help you in any way!

Thank you for continuing to support us as we do our very best each and every day to provide your children with the best education possible!

Special Area Spotlight

Library: We have a busy month ahead of us, especially here in the Lambs Library! We will be celebrating Read Across America week from March 6th through March 10th. Each day of this week will involve themed days, the Spring Book Fair, Tile Night on Thursday, March 9th, and this week will kick off the whole school reading the book The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate throughout the month! The 4th and 5th grade students will be busy going to lower grade classrooms and reading library books to students with the masks they've made to go with the book they chose. First and Second graders will be participating in a March Madness bracket, choosing their favorite South Carolina Picture Book nominees for the 2022-2023 year and narrowing them down to a Lamb's favorite! We are so excited to celebrate that EVERYONE reads this month and to share the joy of reading throughout the year! Thank you for your continued support!

Art: Shout out to Tamiya Ward (music) and Autumn Jenkins (dance) for being recognized by Charleston County School District as gifted and talented. This is quite an honor and we are proud of their hard work and determination! They are both eligible for the SMART summer programs through CCSD.

MARCH is a time to explore SPRING in ART! Students will relate visual arts ideas to other arts disciplines, content areas and careers. Kindergarten will delve into the lifecycle of a plant, the artwork of author/illustrator Lois Elhert, and will create plant collages. First grade will study the art and career of New York artist Keith Haring and use watercolors to create POP ART! Second grade will explore cherry blossom trees and the art and style of Japanese artist Koichi Okada. Third grade will further explore Japanese art, and the Mt. Fuji series by HOKUSAI. Third graders will create a mixed media piece inspired by Hokusai's The Great Wave. Fourth graders will explore MOAI statues located on Easter Island, off the coast of Chile and draw their own MOAI statue! Fifth grade will study nature inspired stained glass art of architect Frank Llyod Wright and create their own stained glass art.

Music: Music classes will continue to celebrate our African American heritage through

history, songs, drumming, and stories. Third grade is making final preparations for

their music field trip to the Galliard on March 30th.
