The Secret Ingredient: Reimbursable Meals at Kellogg Joint School District The Secret Ingredient: Reimbursable Meals at Kellogg Joint School District

By Leah Figueroa, Food Services Director

Parents want to be sure their children are eating well at school and our team at Kellogg Joint School District wants that, too! A key way we support healthy eating is through reimbursable meals, which ensure our students receive balanced, nutritious food each day.

Because our district participates in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) grant, all healthy breakfast and lunch meals are provided to every student at 100% no cost.

So, what exactly is a reimbursable meal?

A reimbursable meal meets specific USDA nutrition guidelines and offers items across five main food groups:

Fruits
Vegetables
Protein (meat/meat alternate)
Whole Grains
Milk

Students do not have to take every item offered, they just need to meet minimum selection rules. This encourages healthy habits, respects student preferences, and minimizes food waste by letting kids choose what they will actually eat.

Building a Reimbursable Meal:

Breakfast: Must include at least 3 items, with at least 1 being a fruit or 100% fruit juice.

Lunch: Students select at least 3 of the 5 components, with at least 1 being a full serving of a fruit or vegetable.

Main Entrées: Most of our entrées credit as 2 components (protein and whole grain), making it easy for students to build a full meal. An entrée plus a fruit or vegetable creates a complete reimbursable lunch!

Milk: Milk is optional for K-12 students. If a K-12 student chooses not to take a standard lunch entrée, they must select a milk, a vegetable, and a fruit/juice to meet the requirement.

Why Reimbursable Meals Matter for KSD:

Every time a student selects a qualifying reimbursable meal, our district receives federal reimbursement to cover the cost of food, preparation, and kitchen operations.

These meals directly sustain our CEP grant funding, allowing us to serve free meals district-wide without requiring individual household applications. Every meal chosen by a student directly fuels their learning and strengthens the KSD Food Services program!
