Behavior Bulletin

💙 Welcome 💙
Updates from your Behavior Specialist
The Behavior Bulletin aims to empower campus leaders in coaching classroom teachers to improve student behavior and outcomes. By providing resources, training, and support, we aim to equip educators with the tools they need to create positive and supportive learning environments, reducing the isolation teachers often feel when dealing with discipline challenges.
📶 Campus Data 📶
To support our leadership teams in monitoring discipline practices and ensuring timely intervention, we are sharing campus-specific data on disproportionality in special education referrals for African American students. This data will help us identify areas where we can improve our practices and ensure equitable outcomes for all students. By using data-driven approaches, we can work together to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all.
🔦 Weekly Behavior Tip 🔦
Behavior Specific Praise
Boost positive behavior by focusing your praise on specific actions. Instead of general comments like "Good job," highlight the exact behavior you appreciate. For example, "Thank you for staying on task during independent work" or "I noticed you helped your classmate today." This targeted feedback reinforces desired behaviors and encourages their repetition.
Benefits of Behavior Specific Praise:
- It clearly defines the desired behavior.
- It reinforces positive actions.
- It helps individuals (and observers) understand what is expected of them.
- It fosters positive connections- 3:1 Ratio
Tips for Effective Behavior-Specific Praise:
- Be Timely: Praise should be given immediately after the desired behavior.
- Be Specific: Clearly state the positive behavior.
- Be Sincere: Ensure your praise is genuine.
- Be Consistent: Regularly reinforce positive behaviors.
- Be Individualized: Tailor praise to the individual's needs and preferences.
Example Scenarios:
- When a student raises their hand: "Thank you for raising your hand, [student's name]. It shows that you're listening and respectful."
- When a student helps a classmate: "It's wonderful to see you helping [student's name]. Your kindness is appreciated."
- When a student completes their work on time: "Great job finishing your assignment on time, [student's name]. Your hard work and focus are impressive."
- When a student shares their ideas: "I love hearing your ideas, [student's name]. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with the class."
- When a student follows the rules: "It's great to see you following the classroom rules, [student's name]. Your behavior is setting a positive example for others."
This plan outlines a comprehensive MTSS - Behavior framework to proactively address challenging student behavior in Tomball ISD. MTSS utilizes a tiered approach, providing increasingly intensive interventions based on individual student needs.
