District Newsletter
Dear Ridgefield Park School Community,
Welcome to the Ridgefield Park Public Schools digital newsletter. We hope you find this to be an excellent way to stay connected with our district family. In this edition, we are pleased to share numerous examples of the exceptional learning experiences taking place across our schools.
From learning how to care for our environment to honoring the hard work and dedication of our students, we are committed to providing meaningful educational experiences. Students have been exploring innovative software and technology, and working diligently to prepare for upcoming state assessments. We are also proud to highlight the talents of our students at the Ridgefield Park Junior-Senior High School’s Second Annual Student Showcase, as well as this year’s musical, "The Wedding Singer."
This newsletter represents just a small sample of the remarkable work happening daily throughout our district. I encourage you to connect with your child's teachers and school administrators to learn more about the specific programs enriching your child's educational journey.
Speaking of our dedicated educators, Teacher Appreciation Week is from May 5th-9th. This special week provides the perfect opportunity to recognize and thank the teachers who work tirelessly to support our students' growth and development. Consider taking a moment to express your gratitude through a thoughtful note or simply a heartfelt "thank you" for their commitment to excellence in education.
In related news, the impact of our educators' dedication is clearly reflected in our recent achievements. According to the latest New Jersey School Performance Report, the Ridgefield Park Public Schools have demonstrated impressive growth between the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years:
✅ Student growth in Math increased by 13 percentile points, with proficiency up by 4.4%
✅ Chronic absenteeism decreased by 3.6 percentage points, outpacing the state's improvement
✅ Our four-year graduation rate improved by 1.9 percentage points
Congratulations to our amazing students, dedicated faculty and staff, hardworking administrators, committed Board of Education, and supportive families, on these achievements! This success marks a milestone, not an end point. We remain focused on the meaningful work ahead.
Lastly, I am excited to share a draft of our updated district mission statement. This revised version preserves the key elements you valued from our current statement while addressing the priorities identified in our previous community survey. The new draft provides clear direction for our district's future and reflects:
- The three focus priorities you identified
- The three key values you want us to uphold
- A more streamlined length compared to our current statement
Proposed Mission Statement:
Our district's core purpose is to nurture lifelong learners who will achieve academic excellence, prepare for future careers, and develop strong character. We prioritize integrity, respect, and empathy in all learning environments, fostering critical thinking and resilience that enable students to reach their full potential. Through strategic partnerships with families and community, we empower students to become responsible global citizens by providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in an evolving world.
Your opinion matters! Please take a moment to complete our quick poll about the new mission statement. Your feedback will help us finalize this important guiding document for our district.
Thank you for your continued support of Ridgefield Park Public Schools. Together, we are creating an environment where every student can thrive.
Best,
Dr. Joseph P. Vespignani
Superintendent of Schools
Does Our Proposed Mission Statement Reflect Our District?
Take Five Briefing
Board of Education Meeting - April 30, 2025
We understand that members of our school community may not be able to attend Board of Education meetings. To help keep stakeholders informed, the Take Five Briefing has been developed to touch upon five key topics discussed at the most recent public Board meeting.
- 2025-2026 School Budget Adoption: The final school budget for the upcoming year was adopted. The budget includes investments in educational programs and facilities while maintaining fiscal responsibility for our taxpayers.
- ROD Grant HVAC Upgrades: As part of the district’s ongoing commitment to improving facilities, the Board approved a contract award to AMCO Enterprises for HVAC upgrades at the Jr.-Sr. High School.
- Revised 24-25 District Calendar: The district calendar has been revised to give back two unused emergency days. As a result, in addition to Monday, May 26th, the district will now be closed on Friday, May 23rd and Tuesday, May 27th, creating an extended Memorial Day weekend for students and staff.
- Summer Programs Approved: Several summer learning opportunities will be offered, including a Special Education Extended School Year program (June 23-August 4), a Title I, K-8 program (June 23-July 17), and a Title I, 9-12 Credit Recovery program (June 23-July 17). These programs support student learning needs throughout the summer months.
Special Event at Yogi Berra Stadium: The Board approved an agreement for our baseball team to play at Montclair State University, securing the iconic Yogi Berra Stadium for a special event on May 20, 2025. This exciting venue will provide our student-athletes with a memorable experience at one of New Jersey's premier collegiate athletic facilities.

Veolia Water Company Visits Grant School
On Friday, April 11th, Veolia Water Company visited Grant School for an engaging and educational day. All students participated in stimulating activities to learn about science and the environment. Pre-K through 1st grade students explored thunderstorms. They listened to a story and completed a coloring sheet to enhance their understanding of how thunderstorms form. Students in 2nd grade investigated water and the states of matter. They also performed an interesting experiment to observe science principles in action.
Students in 3rd through 6th grade concentrated on the three Rs—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. They discovered methods to protect the Earth and minimize plastic waste. Each student created a plastic bottle into a self watering planter to bring home. All participants thoroughly enjoyed learning with the professional team from Veolia. We anticipate their return visit at the conclusion of the school year!
Lincoln School Celebrates Student of the Month
Each month Lincoln School honors students who earned Student of the Month. For March, we are proud to celebrate Roberto Salgado, Lauren Palmer, and Jocelyn Hernandez Lopez, who are pictured here. Each month educators have the opportunity to nominate students for exemplary character or for demonstrating exceptional kindness through their actions.
Additionally, the Student of the Week program allows educators to recognize students by grade level for academic dedication and diligence displayed in their classes. These two excellent initiatives acknowledge positive contributions within our school community. Recipients also receive brag tags as part of a new recognition system implemented in 2025.
Technology Class at Lincoln School with Ms. Fares
In Technology class, the Kindergarten and 1st grade students continue to explore the fascinating world of dinosaurs. Students navigate the PBSKids Dinosaur Field Guide website to engage with educational games, discover dinosaur facts, and view informative videos.
The 2nd grade students focus on developing mathematical abilities through mathgames.com. Students enjoy assisting various digital characters through activities by applying their mathematical knowledge. The 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students concentrate on state assessment preparation. The standardized tests contain numerous digital tools, and students practice with these resources to become familiar with the assessment format before the upcoming examinations.
Kindergarten at Roosevelt School with Ms. Cullen, Ms. Davis and Ms. Lella
Kindergarten students are becoming great readers at this point in the school year! Students engage in independent reading for 16 minutes daily and thoroughly enjoy this autonomous literacy practice! Please monitor communications for updates regarding your child's current reading level assessment.
In mathematics, students explore addition and subtraction concepts. Students create visual representations and compose numerical equations to solve mathematical problems. Students develop understanding that addition involves combining quantities while subtraction involves separating quantities. Students also utilize pattern recognition to build computational fluency in both operations.
Our class participated in the school book fair, where students experienced delight in discovering literature appropriately matched to their independent reading capabilities.
Enrichment/Gifted and Talented at Roosevelt School with Ms. Morris
Kindergarten through 2nd grade enrichment classes explore Irish folklore and complete March themed STEM projects. First grade students particularly enjoyed constructing basketball hoops for a March Madness challenge. Third grade Gifted and Talented students begin a new instructional unit wherein they design and construct miniature houses, investigating area, perimeter, and geometric principles throughout the process.
In the upper grades, 4th grade Gifted and Talented students continue to design and create educational board games. Students in 5th grade Gifted and Talented programs receive introduction to the Strawbees construction system and utilize these materials to study and build simple machines. The 6th grade Gifted and Talented students progress in their mythological creatures research. They develop Google Slide presentations to educate peers about their selected creatures. Students will design and construct model containment systems that safely capture their creatures without inflicting harm.
Lens on the Preserve: Student Photography Awards
The Ridgefield Park Junior-Senior High School and the Ridgefield Park Environmental Commission recently partnered to celebrate the creativity and talent of our students at the Lens on the Preserve award ceremony held on April 30th in the Nature Preserve parking lot. This special event honored students who participated in the three seasonal photo contests designed to promote awareness and appreciation of the Ridgefield Park Nature Preserve.
Throughout the school year, students were invited to visit the Nature Preserve and capture photos using DSLR cameras with all manual controls. Open to all students, the contest challenged them to use their technical photography skills and artistic eye to submit their best photos. A panel of local judges carefully evaluated the entries, selecting winners based on composition, creativity, and technical excellence.
At the ceremony, attendees from the school district, the Environmental Commission, and Commissioner William Gerken, representing the Village of Ridgefield Park, gathered to celebrate the achievements of our young photographers. The final voting for the spring round of the contest was conducted in person, and winners from all three seasons-fall, winter, and spring-were recognized for their outstanding work.
Each winner received a canvas print of their photo, a $50 Visa gift card, and the honor of having their work displayed at both the entrance of the Nature Preserve and Ridgefield Park High School. Light refreshments were generously provided by our very own CHiRP Café.
The Lens on the Preserve contest is a wonderful example of how hands-on learning and community collaboration can inspire environmental stewardship and artistic expression. We look forward to continuing this tradition and encourage all students to participate in future contests.
