Principal's Message - Building Excellence Together
Dear MMK Families and Community,
I need to start this week's message with heartfelt gratitude. Our community's recent passage of our replacement levy is a powerful affirmation of what we're building together at Mary M. Knight. In voting to support our schools, you've made a clear statement: our children matter, our school matters, and excellence is worth investing in. That vote of confidence means everything to our students, our staff, and our future.
This levy gives us the resources to continue the work you see in every corner of our school—from well-maintained classrooms to robust after-school programs, from competitive sports teams to enrichment opportunities that help every child thrive. It ensures that Mary M. Knight remains a place where students grow academically and emotionally, where our educators have the support they need, and where our small rural community can continue to punch above its weight.
Speaking of students thriving, as we return from our Presidents' Day break, I'm reminded of the energy and excellence that flows through our school every single day. Our Lady Owls basketball team continues to make us incredibly proud, advancing in the District 4 Tournament with their hard work and determination. Please join us this Thursday at 5:30 PM in Raymond to cheer them on! Win or lose, they've already shown us what true Owl Pride looks like.
Equally inspiring are our GRIT Award winners this week. From Hunter Vogland's steady growth in math to Paislee VanBoven's quiet leadership and kindness, these young people embody our values of Growth mindset, Resilience, Intensity, and Tenacity. And I'm thrilled to see so many students recognizing their peers—that's how we build a thriving school culture.
Looking ahead, our Spring Sports season launches next month, offering another wonderful opportunity for our middle and high school students to stay active and represent Mary M. Knight with pride. Registration is open now through FinalForms.
This small rural district of ours has something truly special: a genuine community that shows up for one another, celebrates our young people, invests in their future, and models the excellence we hope to instill in them. Thank you for being part of that. Your support—both in the ballot box and every day—makes all the difference.
Go Owls! 🦉

GRIT Award Winners - Week of February 9, 2026
GRIT stands for Growth mindset, Resilience, Intensity, and Tenacity — the qualities that help our students grow every day. This month's focus is Leadership with Intensity: inspiring others through how we act, how we treat people, and how we rise to challenges. This week's honorees are doing exactly that!
Remy Guelzo | 1st Grade Remy kept practicing the swinging monkey bars until she finally made it all the way across. Determination at its best!
Ronan Jones | 2nd Grade Ronan completed all of his in-class assignments last week while also being an outstanding teammate. Hard work + great attitude = GRIT!
Riley Coleman | 7th Grade Facing a tough situation, Riley talked it through and then handled the challenge entirely on her own. That takes real courage!
Nicholas Horn | 2nd Grade Nicholas has spent two weeks not just completing his work, but slowing down to make it quality work — all while being a wonderful helper to classmates and his teacher.
Addison Coppersmith | 1st Grade When a staff member was unexpectedly called away before her lunch was ready, Addison waited patiently and gracefully through the entire lunch period. TRUE patience and GRIT!
Kynslee Lingnau | 1st Grade Kynslee has shown remarkable growth in reading and writing this year by approaching every challenge with determination and never giving up. She is a shining example of what dedication can achieve.
Hunter Vogland | 1st Grade ⭐ Staff + Peer Nominated! Hunter has shown steady, impressive growth in math through consistent effort and determination — and a classmate nominated him this week too, recognizing that his GRIT inspires others!
Kenna Gillham-Hall | 2nd Grade Kenna has been working hard to finish her work every day and is doing a great job with her consistent follow-through. Keep it up, Kenna!
Madilyn Horn | 8th Grade Madilyn shows GRIT through kindness — her warm greetings and caring spirit make people feel seen and valued every single day. That is leadership in action!
Brielle Dunnington | 1st Grade Brielle shows GRIT by being an inclusive, kind friend who makes sure no one is left out. Her big heart makes our school a better place.
Paislee VanBoven | 1st Grade ⭐ Double Peer Nominated! Paislee earned two peer nominations this week — for being kind and polite every day, and for helping a classmate back up after a fall. Quiet leadership at its finest!
Lucas Vogland | 5th Grade Lucas has been working hard on his math and doing it with kindness toward others — and a classmate noticed and wanted to celebrate it. Way to go, Lucas!
💛 Students Recognizing Students
This week's peer-to-peer nominations came from: Tristen Ushman, Freya Weaver, Harper Finch, Meika Garcia, Brielle Dunnington, Kynslee Lingnau, and Cloie Kitchell. When students take time to celebrate the good in each other, it's a sign our school culture is thriving. We are proud of all of you!
