January has been a fun, full month at Middleton. See just a few of the highlights below. The SUN has been an added bonus, and will hopefully carry us through some rainy months ahead. We are all looking forward to our Staff Appreciation Week next week. THANK YOU to all of the amazing parents who are planning and organizing so many ways to support and enourage our incredible staff at Middleton. We are grateful!

Inclement Weather Reminders Inclement Weather Reminders

At this time of year, it's important to be ready for inclement weather communications. Please make sure your ParentSquare account is active and your FlashAlert subscription is current.

In the event of emergencies, inclement weather, or urgent alerts (such as bus route delays) Sherwood School District will utilize one or more of the following communication methods to provide information and updates to families and staff:

ParentSquare – This is a school-to-home communication tool that will send district or school-level alerts, newsletters, or announcements to the parent/guardian information on file with the school. If your email address or phone number has changed, please update your contact information with your child’s school office.

FlashAlert – All emergency alerts and inclement weather closures/delays will be broadcast via FlashAlert. This is a free subscription service that alerts users via text or app notifications. Sign up at www.flashalert.net/signup or by downloading the FlashAlert app on your smartphone. If you have signed up for FlashAlert previously, please sign in to make sure your subscription is current. If you are not subscribed to our channel, you can search for “Sherwood Sch. Dist.” to sign up for our district’s alerts.

District Website – All high-priority alerts will be posted to the main SSD website (look for a red or green alert bar at the top of the page).

Vision Screening Vision Screening

We are offering a free vision screening for all students on Tuesday, February 18th. This screening is conducted by the Lions Club with the assistance of parent volunteers, using SPOT screening devices. The screening is painless and performed from a distance, without touching your child’s eyes or face.

Screening Results

  • Results will be available in about a week.

  • Most children pass the exam.

  • "Did not pass" results will be sent home with students via backpack mail.

  • If you would like a copy of your child’s "passing" results, please contact your school office.

Opt-Out Option: If you do not want your child to participate in the vision screening, please contact your school office to opt out.

Questions: If you have questions about the vision screening, contact Health Services at 503-825-5093.

Financial Assistance: If your child needs an eye exam or glasses, financial assistance may be available.

5th Grade Preparing for Biztown

Each year our fifth graders get to visit Biztown where they get to be "adults" for a day. They have jobs and bank accounts, lunch breaks and spending money. This incredible field trip takes a lot of preparation, and this week, 12 fifth graders ran for mayor of Biztown, and Beckham Amicci was voted in as mayor! Today, all fifth grade students interviewed for jobs. For many students, this is an elementary school highlight. Thank you to SEF for this incredible opportunity for all Sherwood 5th graders.

Save the Date for a new Middleton Family Event

Wednesday, April 16th 5:00pm-7:00pm

We are so excited to begin what will hopefully become an annual event at Middleton to celebrate the culture and heritage of our Middleton families. We are calling it “Around the World at Middleton.” This evening will be a vibrant and lively celebration of the many cultures represented at Middleton. We invite Middleton students and their families to host a table to decorate and display artifacts representing their culture. Families are also invited to come dressed in their native ceremonial dress. Participation in the event is free and there is no cost to attend. If you are interested in hosting a table to share your cultural and heritage with us, please fill out this Google Form or email Natasha Edinger (nedinger@sherwood.k12.or.us).

EVERYONE is invited to come and join in the fun that evening. Families can come anytime between 5:00 and 6:30 to visit tables. Students will receive “passports” to take with them as they travel around and visit the different tables where they will receive a stamp from each country. Additionally, we’ll have games and crafts for students to try, and we are hoping to secure food truck(s) out back if families would like to purchase dinner. Doors will open at 5:00. At 6:30, we will end the night with a parade of flags and hopefully a few cultural performances.

Additionally, we will have a Cultural Art Walk through the halls at Middleton. All Middleton students will complete a piece of cultural art to display in the hall. During the event, families are welcome to walk the halls and admire the art.

If you have any questions about how you might be a part of this special night, please contact the school office at (503) 825-5300.
