A Message from the Principal
Dear Families,
I wanted to give a BIG shoutout to our Grade 6 students on their recent testing performances. All of our students participate in MAP testing three times per year to gauge the percentage of students meeting grade-level expectations. This fall, 88% of our Grade 6 students are meeting their grade-level expectations. This is more than double the Massachusetts average!
Our Grade 6 students also recently participated in the National Catholic Math League for the first time ever. They ranked 7th out of 88 schools in the country! Griffin Miller, one of our Grade 6 students, scored in the Top 25 out of 1,264 students! We are so proud to see our students performance reflecting academic excellence, one of our S.T.A.R.S. values here at St. Mary’s. In alignment with these values, our Grade 6 students have demonstrated curiosity, perseverance, and a desire to constantly grow their knowledge.
I hope you have a beautiful and safe Thanksgiving holiday with your loved ones. We look forward to welcoming our students back on Monday, December 1st, as we will light the first candle on our Advent Wreath during Parking Lot Prayers.

Happy Thanksgiving -- Thank You!
As we gathered in gratitude this morning for the Liturgy of the Word with our entire school community, we were able to take some time to reflect on the blessings we are truly thankful for. This week, our halls, classrooms, and parish were filled with the spirit of giving, prayer, and generosity, and we are so grateful for everyone who helped make it possible. During the service led by Fr. Jonathan, our students from each grade level shared what they are thankful for. Afterwards, each child and staff member received a loaf of bread from Iggy's Bread to break with their families on Thanksgiving Day.
Thank you to Adam, from Iggy's, for preparing approximately 300 loaves of bread for our community. Dr. Nadjarian and Ms. Gloria went to the factory to pick them up early Monday morning. We are so grateful to the parent volunteers and staff who spent their time cutting and packaging the bread in preparation for the service. A special thank you to Lucia, one our amazing K1 parents, who formed this partnership with Iggy's!
We extend a heartfelt thank you to all the families who so generously donated to the Thanksgiving food drive for the parish—your kindness will make a meaningful difference for many households in our community this Thanksgiving. Thank you also to our middle school students, who worked thoughtfully and efficiently to pack and organize the bags for families. Their teamwork will ensure that every donation reaches those who needed it most. Thank you all for your generosity and true spirit of giving!
Thank you to the parent volunteers who coordinated and distributed pies for our teachers, especially Jayme Simovic, and the many families who generously donated pies to show their appreciation to our faculty and staff. This is a highlight of the season for so many!

A Message from Nurse Katie
Colder Weather!
As we head into the winter months, please be sure to send your child to school dressed appropriately for colder weather. All children should be bundled up in the following gear: coats, hats, gloves and appropriate footwear. Students go out for recess every day unless the weather is inclement or below freezing, and it is important that they are dressed warmly so they remain healthy!
Facilities Team Shout Out!
Please join me in thanking our wonderful facilities team—Mr. Eddie, Mr. Ronald, Mr. Edwin, and Mr. John — for their efforts in maintaining a clean school environment for all of us at St. Mary's! They work tirelessly throughout the week and weekend to make sure that we have a safe, clean, and healthy school to work and learn in. Thank you, Facilities team!
Infant and Toddler
Our Infant and Toddler students are getting ready for Thanksgiving with a variety of turkey themed art projects! Our infant students used their creativity to make beautiful hand turkeys, showing gratitude for their families! Our toddler students focused on team work and collaboration to create a giant classroom turkey! They also discussed gratitude and examples of things they may be grateful for. We love to see our youngest St. Mary’s students practicing these important skills!
PreK
Last week was very exciting for Mrs. Porcello's class: it was all about pizza! They started by decorating their very own aprons. They also mixed flour and water in the sensory table to make "pizza dough." They also enjoyed imaginative play by cooking in the pizzeria.
At circle time, they did a last read of Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza. Then, they discussed the ingredients and directions for making pizza. Students learned that they would be making their very own English muffin pizzas. They put on our aprons and headed to the table to start cheffing it up!
Students received their own personal bowl with the ingredients needed to make the pizzas. They followed step by step, sneaking a few bites of cheese along the way! Once the pizzas were assembled, they took a trip down to the oven. We discussed oven safety, put the pizzas inside, and headed back upstairs.
After recess, the class took a trip back to the kitchen to pick up our pizzas. Students were so excited to taste them! After patiently waiting for Mrs. Porcello and Miss Yazmin to stop taking pictures, they DEVOURED the pizzas! Students felt just like Little Red Hen and all of her friends sitting together eating pizza.
PreK and Grade 1
Ms. Johnson and her 1st grade class visited their buddies Miss Houlder's class this week! It was absolutely amazing and all the kids had so much fun. They made turkey hats together, and the first graders helped PreK students to write on each box what they are thankful for! Students were thankful for food, family, pets, and so much more. The first graders also helped cut it out when they were done coloring and writing.
K1
The K1 students in Mrs. Curley's class spent the week learning about the history of Thanksgiving and the early United States through stories, hands-on activities, and art. They explored the journey of the Mayflower, imagined what it was like to see Plymouth Rock for the first time, and learned how the Pilgrims built homes in their new land. They also discovered how Native Americans helped the Pilgrims survive by teaching them to grow food. Throughout the unit, students recorded everything they learned in their Thanksgiving books and created colorful artwork to go along with their writing.
K2
K2 has been learning all about the five senses! Each week, students focused on one sense and participated in a hands-on activity to explore it. Some of their exciting activities included a camera sight walk, a mystery smell experiment, a feeling balloons experiment, listening bingo, and a taste test. Students also recorded their discoveries in science journals and made colorful classroom books to share their learning.
Grade 1
Ms. Johnson's class held a special show-and-tell day, where each student was encouraged to bring in a special item that represented their heritage! Students learned about each other's family traditions and celebrated the diverse first grade community. They added pins to a world map showcasing where each of their families are from.
Ms. Johnson's first grade class also celebrated their classroom Saint, St. Cecilia! St. Cecilia's feast day is November 22nd. Fr. David joined the class to learn about St. Cecilia, the Patron Saint of music. The students made harps from popsicle sticks and rubber bands, an instrument often associated with St. Cecilia.
Grade 2
Mrs. Sterge's class practiced their deductive reasoning skills with a mystery - Which Turkey Escaped Thanksgiving Dinner? After going undercover as their own disguised turkey, students worked individually and in groups on various challenges that revealed clues as to which Turkey it was.
Grade 3
In Grade 3 , students practiced their spelling words last week! They have a routine they do each week to learn their new words. Students begin each week by receiving their new word lists on Monday and completing a word sort focused on the specific spelling skill their differentiated group is practicing. On Tuesday, they bring their words to life by forming them with Model Magic, turning spelling into a creative, hands-on activity. Wednesday’s practice uses magnetic letters, giving students another interactive way to build and break apart their words. On Thursday, they write their words in a fun shape, combining art and literacy to reinforce spelling patterns. The week wraps up on Friday with a spelling test, giving students a chance to show what they’ve learned. Great job, third grade!
Grade 5
This week was Miss Julia's take over week in the 5th grade, and she ended her mini science unit on changing matter with a fun science experiment! Students were given the opportunity to create Elephant Toothpaste. Students then reflected on what parts of the experiment were physical changes and which were chemical changes. Great job, scientists!
Grades 3-5 Field Trip
Grades 3-5 went on a field trip to the Boston Aquarium today! They took the T downtown and had an exciting, hands-on learning adventure that brought science to life. Students explored exhibits filled with colorful fish, graceful sea turtles, and playful penguins while discovering how different marine animals survive in their habitats. They got to experience the touch tank, where they got to touch rays. They also watched a video in the theater that gave them some great background information. It is wonderful to see experiential learning happening that connects to everything students have been learning in class!
Middle School
In 6th Grade Social Studies, the students are learning about the first humans and how they communicated with each other using the earliest form of language, symbols painted on caves. The students will be using crinkled paper taped on the bottom of tables to represent how cave paintings were completed.
8th grade partner pairs designed fictional countries that operate under an assigned system of government (i.e, democracy, oligarchy, anarchy, theocracy, monarchy, etc). They presented their countries and governments to the rest of the class, trying to persuade the class that this is the best system for their citizens.
Middle School Leadership Seminar
I am so proud of our SGA! The first Monday of each month the Student Government Association elected council will have a working lunch with me: we’ll discuss problems of practice with a solution-oriented mindset, we’ll look ahead to plan for events and community service opportunities, and we will work to engage the town hall. The town hall meetings will be that same day, during our Leadership Seminar block. Our first meeting will be Monday December 1st.
Additionally, we have started a film series with the rated-PG movie, “Remember the Titans.” If you haven’t seen it, please check it out! A brief synopsis: “this is an inspiring sports drama based on the true story of a high school football team - which was everything to the people in the southern city of Alexandria, Virginia. The film explores themes of racial integration, teamwork, and overcoming adversity in the face of division and prejudice.” We watch about 20 to 25 minutes of the film and then do a reflection activity as a class for the 2nd half of the block. This past week, students wrote a 1-page essay on “if I were to get an A-grade for the things that don’t have to do with academics [emotions, relationships, helping others, integrity, etc.] I would deserve that A because….” We got some really thoughtful responses. Please ask your son or daughter what they think of the movie so far!
A subcommittee that was born from the Parent Volunteer Council met on Tuesday morning to discuss Middle-School-only community nights to build bridges and discuss intentional ways to bring the entire Middle School community together…stay tuned on some fun events and initiatives coming up soon!
