Hawk Families,

Good afternoon! I hope that you were able to have a great weekend!

I would like to say that it was a great first week for our students. I hope they were able to navigate their schedules and figure out their way around campus, I hope they were able to connect with their teachers, and finally I hope they were able to find a friend or someone they didn't know.

As I stated before the most important part of high school is to get connected to the campus somehow. We have a number of clubs and organizations on campus. If your student doesn't know who to ask tell them to find myself or any administrator and we will help them get involved.

This newsletter has very important information that wil keep you updated with what is going on at Canyon Lake High School. I encourage you to please read thoroughly to stay connected to our campus as a parent.

As always, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to call or just swing by our doors are always open. Have a great day and GO HAWKS!

Hawk Summer Band

Summer Band 2023 has come to a close. A huge thank you to our wonderful students who invested in their band, their sections, their friends, their music, their community and their school. Your hard work doesn't go unnoticed and it's building upon the HawkBand culture. Thank you to our wonderful boosters who have supported us with their already hundreds of hours of volunteering and organizing for the 2023-2024 season. AND thank you to our parents who shuttle our students to and from rehearsals.

On a personal note, thank you to Mr. Davis and Mr. Adams with their work in the percussion section and Mrs. Conard and Mr. DelGado for their help with sectionals and a huge thank you to the late Randy Leifeste. He was the HawkBand's biggest fan and advocate and was inspired by their attitude and tenacity. On multiple occasions, he expressed how much he LOVED working with the HawkBand and how much he looked forward to working with us, daily. We love you Mr. Leifeste and won't forget the lessons you taught us or the way you made us feel like the only band in your world.

Reserved Parking

The parking spots will be reserved starting the Fred game on Friday? We will have them painted but the signs won’t be in on time. The plan is to paint them and stencil “reserved” but want to be sure everyone knows that moving forward, those will be reserved for ALL sporting events, not just Varsity football and that if they want to purchase there are still some available:

23-24 Video Intercom System Added To Each Campus Entrance

Before entering a school this year, you will notice a new safety feature. The new addition is a video intercom system located on an exterior wall near the entrance of each campus. The system will be marked with a yellow sign.

In order to enter the school, every visitor will step up to this intercom; push the button; and tell the front office staff his or her name and the reason for the visit. The front office staff will be able to see the visitor through the video camera and grant entrance into the front door.

Once inside, visitors will be required to show a picture ID and sign-in. Please note that this will be the new procedure every time you visit a Comal ISD campus whether it is to drop off lunch or to pick-up your student for a doctor’s appointment.

As the school year begins, please be patient with each other and the staff as this new procedure becomes routine and a part of our district’s overall safety procedures.

Texas House Bill 114 - SAY NO TO VAPING

Parents:

Students Caught With Vapes, will be Placed in an Alternative Education Facility

Texas House Bill 114, which was passed by legislators this summer, mandates that any student found in possession of a vaping device on district property or at a district event will be placed in a disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) regardless of the content of the device.

HB 114 is titled, "Relating to the possession, use, or delivery of marihuana or e-cigarettes on or near public school property or at certain school events."

23-24 Electronic Devices & Technology Resources Policy

For safety purposes, the district permits students to possess personal telecommunications and other electronic devices in school; however, these devices are subject to the Student Code of Conduct, Acceptable Use Policy, and the discretion of the district and campus administration and personnel.

In addition, the following applies to all students:

  • A student shall obtain prior approval before using personal telecommunications or other electronic devices for on-campus instructional purposes. [See policy FNCE].
  • All personal telecommunications or other personal electronic devices must remain silenced or turned off and put away to prevent disruption to the learning environment. However, students may use personal telecommunications or other personal electronic devices while on campus during these designated times only - High School- before school and after school, during lunch, and during passing periods. Middle School- before school and after school. Elementary School-no use.
  • The use of mobile telephones or any device capable of capturing images or video is strictly prohibited in locker rooms or restroom areas while at school or at a school-related or a school-sponsored event.

An authorized district employee may confiscate a personal electronic device, including a mobile telephone, used in violation of applicable campus rules. [See policy FNCE].

Any disciplinary action in addition to confiscation will be in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and in accordance with the student handbook. The student or the student's parents may retrieve the device at the conclusion of the school day and after paying the fee [See policy FNCE]. A confiscated device shall be released as outlined below:

  • 1st offense - Warning + parent notification
  • 2nd offense - $5.00 administrative fee + parent notification
  • 3rd offense - $10.00 administrative fee + parent notification
  • 4th+ offense - $15.00 administrative fee + parent notification

In limited circumstances and in accordance with law, a student’s personal electronic device may be searched by authorized personnel [See policy FNF].

The student shall also acknowledge receipt and understanding of applicable regulations and shall sign the appropriate user agreements [See policy CQ]. Included in this handbook is the district’s Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) (Appendix C).

23-24 Dress Code

The district’s dress code prevents disruption, minimizes safety hazards, and maintains a positive learning climate. Students and parents may determine personal attire and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:

  • Any clothing, accessories, or visible tattoos that depict images or language that are lewd, offensive, vulgar, obscene, or advertise weapons, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or other substances are strictly prohibited. *Offensive is defined as indecent, sexually explicit, or advocates prejudice or discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or age.
  • Any clothing and accessories that could be considered costume wear are strictly prohibited unless the clothing is part of a teacher-approved or campus-approved activity. Shoes must be worn at all times. Slippers are not permitted.
  • Any clothing that is sheer, see-through, mesh, exposes the midsection, back, chest, or other areas that are considered private, are strictly prohibited. Undergarments shall not be visible or exposed. Spaghetti straps (a strap less than 2”) and tanks with oversized armholes are not permitted without a sleeved undershirt.
  • Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be of a modest length. Clothing cannot have holes or frays that expose any undergarments or private areas of the body.
  • All head coverings and hats must not be worn inside school buildings except for a cap or hat that is part of (1) a uniform worn at a school activity (2) for religious or medical purposes, or (3) part of a teacher-approved or campus-approved activity. Hoodies are allowed, but the hood must remain down while in the building.
  • Facial piercings should be small and discrete. Jewelry and accessories that could be considered dangerous or could be used as a weapon are prohibited.
  • Hairstyles must not detract from learning.
  • District-issued student IDs must be visible before or during school hours for secondary students.

If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school and return to the classroom. If the problem cannot be corrected at school, the campus administration will work with the student and a parent to obtain an acceptable change of clothing for the student in a way that minimizes the loss of instructional time. Repeated or severe offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

The principal, in cooperation with the sponsor, coach, or a person in charge of an extracurricular activity, may regulate the dress and grooming of students who participate in the activity. Students who violate dress and grooming standards established for such an activity may be removed or excluded from the activity for a period determined by the principal or sponsor and may be subject to other disciplinary action, as specified in the Student Code of Conduct. This includes UIL activities or other special functions. [See FO series].

These modifications and changes were made based on parent feedback as well as the Discipline Task Force, District Education Improvement Council (DEIC), Student Advisory, Parent Task Force, Campus Athletic Coordinators, and Administrators whose members provided recommendations. The District also received more than 5,000 responses to the Dress Code/Electronic Device survey regarding these policies.
