Message from the Superintendent
Our learning community has dove into the rewarding, exciting, and complex work of education, and I have much to share with you.
Attendance at our back-to-school nights has been pre-pandemic incredible. Thank you to our teachers and staff who help make these evenings possible and to our families for making the time to connect. A consistent topic across all levels has been the introduction of our newly adopted K-12 language arts curriculum. Last spring our School Board approved the new curriculum after extensive consideration from our educators and community. Teachers have completed their training with the new resources and we are looking forward to seeing students' progress with the new materials in our classrooms.
Part of choosing a career in education means being a continuous learner! LOSD has introduced a new career pathway program. We held our first Teacher Leader Course this week with many teachers who participated on their own time to hone their leadership skills. We will also be hosting sessions for our classified employees who want to be teachers and for employees who are aspiring administrators. I'm excited that we have so many members of our staff who have committed to improving their leadership skills.
Integral to learning and improving is assessing data. At the School Board meeting Monday, I outlined timing for sharing our district's academic/behavioral/participation data to provide transparency with our community. Some of the data is embargoed by the state, which directs the timing. You can find the schedule below in this edition of the newsletter.
Thank you for your partnership in our learning community's growth and development.
Providing Data Schedule for Transparency
The following is a schedule of when LOSD will share academic/behavioral/participation data at School Board meetings and other district and school communications:
September: AP testers by demographics and AP score trends
October: Hiring statistics, state assessments, school report cards, 9th-grade on-track, and ACT/SAT scores
November: Attendance reporting and students on 504 plans, with a disability, and talented and gifted by demographic group
December: Academic support enrollment by demographic group and advanced class enrollment by demographic group
January: PSAT/PACT and iReady growth measures
February: F-rates by demographic group (1st Semester) and graduation rate (prior year)
March: Discipline and incident reporting, safety reporting, and annual sustainability presentation
April: Forecasting by demographic group, English Language Developing participation, and annual equitable academic outcomes presentation
May: Technology, Unified Sports participation, athletic/activity participation, and annual culture of belonging presentation
June: Annual health and resiliency presentation
Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This week marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated annually September 15 - October 15. During this time, we are encouraged to pay tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.
Elevating Student Voices at School Board Meetings
School Board meetings are rotating to different schools to highlight all of our learning communities. Kicking off this year’s school tour was Forest Hills Elementary where student representatives shared their experiences. Appreciating teachers and staff and making new friends were consistent sentiments from the student presenters.
The Lake Oswego School Board encourages attendance and welcomes participation in its proceedings. Testimony from students, employees, families, and residents in our community may be submitted in writing or presented in person at the meetings. Thank you to the Forest Hills students for their engagement in our public education system.
Seeking Students to Serve on Committees
- Create a Culture of Belonging
- Achieve Equitable Academic Outcomes
- Promote Health and Resiliency
- Teach and Practice Sustainability
Find more information about the committees on the district website under School Board Committees.
State Assessment Score Reports
LOSD now delivers students’ state assessment results online through ParentVUE rather than mailing paper. This is in keeping with the district’s strategic goal of sustainability and mirrors how we deliver report cards. Your child’s 2021-22 assessment reports are now available on your ParentVUE Documents page. As you review your student’s English Language Arts, math, and science scores, please keep in mind:
An achievement level of 3 or 4 is considered to be on track for the student’s grade level.
Scores on state assessments are only one measure of a student’s academic progress. We use these scores in conjunction with classroom work and other daily, weekly, monthly, and term assessments to understand your student’s strengths and areas for improvement.
If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account or need assistance, please contact your student’s school.
Pulling for Oregon Special Olympics
LOSD's Scott Schinderle, Executive Director of Student Services, helped mark the 50th anniversary of the Oregon Special Olympics by participating in the “Plane Pull” fundraising event this past weekend. In an awesome demonstration of the power of teamwork, Scott's team was able to pull the 40,000-pound plane! Special Olympics Unified Teams that join people with and without disabilities participated in this inclusive event. Thanks Scott for leading by example.
How to Report Incidents at School
LOSD Incident Reports are for students and adults to report incidents that occur in school. Incidents may be microaggressions, harassment or discrimination related to race, ethnicity, religion, age, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other aspect of identity. Find incident reports on each school's website under Find It Fast / Report an Incident.
Incidents may also be reported to an administrator, a trusted staff member, or anonymously to SafeOregon.com.
Be Sure to Complete Volunteer Application
For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when spending time in schools. To help streamline compliance with state and school board policies, which require that all volunteers have background checks and knowledge of other board policies -- as well as state-mandated proof of vaccination (or a qualified exemption) -- we are introducing a new all-in-one volunteer application and approval process through our Raptor Visitor Management System.
Volunteer Application for LOSD can be found on every school and district website under Resources.
Complete Required Tech Consent Forms
In order for students to use school district software or any technology resources (devices, digital textbooks, etc.), there are three actions that need to be completed at the beginning of each school year:
- A parent or guardian must provide consent for each student to use District software and resources
- A Parent/Guardian and each Student must agree to the Acceptable Use Policy
- Families must choose to enroll or decline participation in the Device Damage and Loss Protection Program ($20 annual fee per student).
