Eclipse It!

Saw that joke in Scout Life magazine and couldn't resist! Thanks, Austin G. from Baltimore, Maryland.

The total eclipse is almost here! As a reminder, all school buildings will be closed on Monday, April 8th, and staff will not be present on campuses. School and community groups will be parking cars on campuses for $20 per spot (cash only), and lots will close once full. No overnight parking is permitted, no parking on grass is permitted, and we do hope that our properties/fields will be respected by all.

The City of Avon Lake has been preparing for this event for over a year now, and has developed a terrific website with all the resources you'll need this weekend:

https://avonlakesolareclipse.com/

The City is also hosting an eclipse watch party at Memorial Stadium. Parking passes/tickets/information for that event are also located at the Avon Lake solar eclipse website.

Enjoy the day, and we'll see everyone for school on April 9th!

District Approved for Transitional Work Grant

Transitional Work is an interim step in the physical recovery of an employee who experiences a work-related injury. Transitional Work Programs use job tasks or a combination of tasks and functions that an individual with work restrictions may safely perform. They may also utilize on-site rehabilitation services to facilitate an injured employee's return to full-duty work. Transitional Work Programs combine real work activities with site-based rehabilitation services as the principal means in the worker's physical recovery. The plans also structure a productive, compensated return to full duty.

The Avon Lake City Schools Transitional Work Program was overdue for an update, and the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation approved the District for a reimbursement grant up to $8,200 to cover 100% of the cost of creating the plan. We anticipate this will be in place before next school year.

2024 Ohio Attorney General's Grant will Help Fund Safety and Security Upgrades at ALHS

Every year that it has been made available, The Avon Lake City Schools have applied for and been awarded a defined, per student amount for safety and security projects in the District. In the past, this money has been used for everything from exterior door replacement to security camera upgrades. While it is a fraction of what could be used safety and security improvements never stop.

This year, the $15,956.14 awarded to the District by the Ohio AG's office will be utilized at the high school toward modernizing and upgrading the building's security alarm system.

Spring and Summer Projects Are Underway!

The picture you see to the right is the result of a small project we completed this spring. The deep cleaning of the fabric sound panels in the Performing Arts Center was just one of dozens of projects large and small that were identified in the building walkthroughs that took place early in 2024.

Spring break was also an incredibly busy time around the District, with roof repairs, plumbing work, security projects, playground inspections, and more being conducted on every campus around the District. A few highlights:

  • Learwood received new panic bars (grant funded) on 9 exterior doors, and Mr. Kozich stripped and re-coated the notoriously slippery gym floor.
  • The District encumbered funds for an LED lighting project at the high school that is projected to result in a $43,000+ energy rebate via FirstEnergy and six figures of annual energy savings.
  • Work continued at the elementary schools on exterior access control systems (grant funded).
  • Roof leaks were addressed (again) at the high school, Learwood, Redwood, Troy, and Westview.
  • Asphalt and sidewalk repair locations were identified at all campuses in preparation for summer.

Meanwhile, our maintenance and custodial crews continued to do everything from cleaning the buildings to lining athletic fields, supporting a huge track meet at ALHS, and, oh yeah, there was this eclipse thing everyone was getting ready for, too!

So, we'll end where we began with a once-in-a-lifetime experience on the horizon and Avon Lake the star of the show! As always, thank you to our classified/support staff for all they do, and we will come roaring out of totality with vigor as we get ready for a terrific, productive summer.
