As we prepare for a fun week next week, please ensure your child's costume they wear DURING THE SCHOOL DAY meets the following guidelines:

  • Please wear age-appropriate costumes that are safe and functional for learning in the classroom with proper footwear.
  • Dress-code rules apply. Please avoid any costumes, parts or accessories that will distract your child or others from learning. Leave all of the "extra" parts at home.
  • Students MAY color their hair as long as hair returns to their natural color the following school day.
  • The following are NOT ALLOWED: costume masks, face paint, fake blood or gore, weapons, inappropriate logos or sayings.
  • Inflatables are discouraged but are allowed if they do not cover your face and you are able to sit in your seat in class.
  • This should be a fun day for all children, so we are asking that scary characters from frightening movies not be part of this day.

Brookhaven Bears Say NO to Bullies!

At Brookhaven Elementary, we are committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where every student feels valued, respected, and connected. Through our PBIS framework, social-emotional learning, student leadership, and family partnerships, we take a proactive, school-wide approach to preventing bullying and responding when concerns arise.

I invite you to take the Brookhaven Elementary Anti-Bullying and School Climate Parent Survey.

Brookhaven’s Anti-Bullying Practices
1. Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
Brookhaven provides prevention and support at multiple levels to meet students’ needs.

  • Universal support: All students learn and practice our PBIS expectations: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. School-wide Second Step lessons, Bear Assemblies, and positive recognition reinforce kindness, inclusion, and appropriate behavior.

  • Targeted support: Students who need additional social-emotional or behavioral support may participate in Lunch Bunch, Check-In/Check-Out, small-group interventions, or counseling support.

  • Individualized support: Students involved in bullying or repeated harmful behaviors receive appropriate follow-up, intervention, reteaching, and accountability based on the circumstances and their individual needs.

2. Multicomponent Programs

Brookhaven addresses student behavior through consistent expectations, positive behavior supports, social-emotional learning, and adult supervision.
  • PBIS expectations are taught, modeled, reinforced, and revisited throughout the school year.

  • Second Step supports students in developing empathy, emotional regulation, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Staff review concerns, reinforce appropriate behavior, and respond to reported incidents using school procedures.

  • School-wide activities promote kindness, belonging, and respect for differences.

3. School-Wide Prevention Activities

Brookhaven works to build a positive school climate where students feel safe reporting concerns and adults respond consistently.
  • Our school-wide PBIS framework establishes clear behavioral expectations.

  • Staff provide supervision and monitor student interactions in classrooms, on the playground, and in other school settings.

  • School-wide anti-bullying activities help students recognize bullying, understand its impact, and identify ways to seek help and support peers.

  • Student recognition and school traditions reinforce a culture of belonging and caring.

4. Family and Community Partnerships

Brookhaven recognizes that preventing bullying requires collaboration between school staff, families, and the broader community.
  • Families are encouraged to report concerns and communicate with school staff.

  • Parent communication helps staff gather information, address concerns, and determine appropriate next steps.

  • School newsletters, parent meetings, and family events provide opportunities to reinforce school expectations and strengthen relationships.

5. Long-Term Social-Emotional Skill Development

Brookhaven intentionally builds the skills students need to maintain healthy relationships and resolve conflicts appropriately.
  • Second Step lessons develop empathy, emotional regulation, and problem-solving.

  • Student Council and PAL activities provide opportunities to model leadership, kindness, inclusion, and peer support.

  • School-wide kindness initiatives encourage students to stand up for others, seek adult help, and contribute to a caring community.

  • PBIS celebrations, Brag Tags, and Bear Hugs recognize students who demonstrate positive choices and our school expectations.

6. Program Fidelity and Continuous Improvement

Brookhaven works collaboratively to ensure prevention efforts are consistent and responsive to student needs.
  • The PBIS team supports implementation of school-wide expectations, interventions, and recognition systems.

  • Staff collaborate during meetings to review prevention strategies, discuss concerns, and strengthen common practices.

  • School-wide anti-bullying activities include opportunities for staff feedback and reflection.

  • Student behavior and school climate information help inform decisions about additional supports and areas for improvement.

Our Commitment

At Brookhaven, anti-bullying is more than a single lesson or event. It is an ongoing commitment to building a community where every student feels safe, included, and supported. By teaching positive behaviors, providing targeted interventions, partnering with families, and holding students accountable for their choices, we strive to ensure that every Bear knows they belong.

Our goal is for every student to understand that kindness matters, bullying is not acceptable, and every member of our school community has a role in creating a safe and respectful environment. I invite you to take the Brookhaven Elementary Anti-Bullying and School Climate Parent Survey.

PYL Promise at Brookhaven 🐻 PYL Promise at Brookhaven 🐻

Living the PYL Promise at Brookhaven 🐻

At Brookhaven, we continue to bring the PYL Promise—Rooted in Connection, Ready for Tomorrow, and Stronger Together—to life through the learning experiences, partnerships, and shared commitments that make our school community special. Here are a few highlights from this past week!

🌱 Rooted in Connection: On Friday, our Brookhaven Bears wore pink to show support for women's health, demonstrating the power of coming together to raise awareness for important causes. We also enjoyed our PTA meeting on Monday evening, where families and staff worked together to support our students and strengthen our school community.

🎨 Ready for Tomorrow: Students participated in art lessons through the Art Masters Program, exploring the work of featured artist Remington and engaging in creative learning experiences. These opportunities encourage students to develop their artistic skills, creativity, and appreciation for the arts.

🤝 Stronger Together: During Wednesday's staff meeting, teachers reviewed our Anti-Bullying Campaign and shared feedback on our school-wide AVID goals. These collaborative conversations help us strengthen a culture of kindness, belonging, and academic success for every Bear. We also participated in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill, practicing important safety procedures to help keep our school community prepared.

From supporting important causes to celebrating creativity and working together to create a safe, welcoming learning environment, we continue to live the PYL Promise in meaningful ways every day.

Rooted in Connection. Ready for Tomorrow. Stronger Together. ❤️🐻

October: Respect

Students believe that the well-being and dignity of all people is important simply because they are fellow human beings and they treat every individual with respect.

Key Beliefs:

I will be a better student if I act on the following beliefs:

  • I will treat others the way I want to be treated.
  • It is important to treat everyone with respect, even if I feel they don’t deserve it.
  • I need to treat everyone the same by accepting their differences, whether they are my friends or people I don’t know very well.
  • I must respect the personal space of others and keep my hands to myself.
  • It is important for people to be included.
