Principal's Message Principal's Message

Dear Sifton Families,

Sifton students had a fantastic start to the school year this year! During the month of September, students focused on learning about the ROAR: Respect, Ownership, Achievement, Responsibility. We had our Terry Fox Run and our Orange Shirt Assembly.

As you read this newsletter, you'll see that our October is planned as usual. As we prepare for the month of October, we want to be ready to pick up and run once we're back at school.

Our focus for the month of October will be taking it outdoors! Outdoor education has proven benefits. Outdoor settings stimulate curiosity and motivation; time in nature promotes calmness and self-regulation. Students can improve their environmental awareness and begin to develop lifelong habits of caring for the natural world. And of course, autumn is a beautiful time to spend outdoors!

Regards,

Kathleen Mclennan - kamclennan@brsd.ab.ca

Update, Oct. 1, 2025

Important Notice: School Closures Due to Strike Action, Begins October 6, 2025

The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) has provided notice that strike action will begin on Monday, October 6, 2025. If this occurs, all schools in Battle River School Division will be closed to students, and no instruction will be taking place during the strike.

Please be aware that:

  • Classes will not be held and teachers will not be available for instruction.
  • No student supervision will be provided, including on school grounds and playgrounds, during regular school hours or after hours. For safety reasons, we strongly encourage families to ensure that children do not access school playgrounds during the school day without supervision in place.
  • Students who arrive at school will not be permitted to stay. Parents/Guardians will be contacted immediately to pick up their child.
  • We will do our best to keep you informed with timely updates regarding the status of the strike and will communicate promptly when classes are scheduled to resume.

We understand that this situation may cause challenges for families, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this process.

For the most current information, please continue to monitor your email, our division website, and official social media channels.

Terry Fox Run

Thank you so much to all of the students and their families who helped us raise funds for cancer research through Terry Fox donations. So far we have collected over $4200! We will continue to collect donations on our school fundraiser page until October 15. Our Terry Fox assembly will be rescheduled if necessary so we can recognize our top fundraisers!

Our Terry Fox run took place on October 1. We were joined by four Kodiak players who cheered the students on as they ran around the field. A great time was had by all!

Orange Shirt Day Assembly

I would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our grade 4 and 5 students who led our Orange Shirt Day assembly. The 5J class led the assembly. 4M led us in the national anthem sung in Cree, and students from 4U read personal land acknowledgements. Mrs. Barclay's class presented the 2025 Orange Rock Project, and then 5J gave information about the roots of Orange Shirt Day and Truth and Reconciliation Day. They closed the assembly with a tremendous performace of "We Are One", by indigenous artists Mag7.
