Counselor Newsletter for May

Hello parents!
It's hard to imagine that this is our last full month of the 23-24 school year. We are honored to have worked with your students this year and look forward to a fresh, new year in the Fall. Please see our latest updates and resources below from our counseling department:
In the month of April, our counselors....
- performed 9 restorative circles/conflict mediations,
- held 9 small social-emotional learning group sessions,
- held 33 individual counseling sessions,
- performed 25 check-ins with or observations of students,
- performed 13 consultations with teachers on how to best support students in class,
- presented classroom lessons to 5 classrooms,
- and offered 5 lunch bunch activities during the students' lunch recess times.
Social Emotional Learning Topic of the Month
Our theme for this month's social emotional learning topic is Internet Safety and Media Balance. With students going into summer break in just a few weeks, we know that there will be more students on their devices. We want to give them the tools to make safe and healthy choices while navigating those spaces.
Here are some articles and videos on both topics that you can use to talk with your student at home and reinforce the ideas they are learning at school:
PAWS Expectations of the Month
At Ernie Pyle, we follow the acronym PAWS:
P: Be Proactive.
A: Act Respectfully and Responsibly.
W: Make Wise Choices.
S: Be Safe.
In May, we are focusing on Acting Respectfully and Responsibly. Some examples of what this looks like is respecting others' privacy in the restrooms, using quiet voices in the hallways, and cleaning up after ourselves when we finish working or playing a space.
