News & Notes from the Principal
Happy Friday Panther Families! It was another great week here at the middle school.
I would like to thank our families and staff for participating in our fall Parent/Teacher conferences. It is vital for all groups to communicate about your child's progress at school. With that in mind, please make sure you have set up the PowerSchool Parent Portal so you can view your child's academic progress online.
Today is the last day of the first quarter. Teachers are finalizing grades and we will be emailing report cards to you in the next few weeks. Students will start their Q2 RASL classes on Monday. For 7th and 8th graders that means they will have a new P1 class and for 5th and 6th graders they will have a new P2 class.
Next week the Student Council has put together a Halloween themed spirit week. We invite our students to participate in the following themed days:
- Monday: Orange and Black Day
- Tuesday: Twin Day
- Wednesday: Pink Day
- Thursday: 90s Day
- Friday: Costume Day and Halloween Assembly
We ask that students still follow our DKMS dress code when dressing up. Masks and costume weapons are not allowed on campus. We will ask students to turn off inflatable costumes during class time to limit distractions. Also, 5th and 6th grade students have the pumpkin creation contest this week. It will be a great Halloween week at DKMS!
Finally, as the weather cools and we get deeper into Fall, please make sure you are calling our attendance line at (269) 623-1540 if your child will not be attending school. Excused absences from school are only the absences you have documentation for such as a doctor, dentist, or therapy visit. As we get into the "sick season" it is important that students attend school as consistently as possible. If a student is sick they must be fever free and not have vomited for at least 24 hours before they return to school.
As always, I would like to thank our students, staff, families, and community for all of their hard work and support. We have reached our first milestone by completing the first quarter of the school year. It is a great time to reflect on how the year has started and to start Monday with a clean slate. Let's start the second quarter strong !
Have a great weekend!
It's a great day to be a PANTHER!
PS- Whether it is Go Blue! or Go Green! Go White! I hope you enjoy the game!!!
Thank you,
Principal

Exploring STEM at STARBASE Battle Creek
Mr. Fawcett’s STARBASE group completed their second week at STARBASE Battle Creek on Monday, and it was an egg-cellent one! Students worked on a project to protect an egg from breaking as it traveled down an elevated wire shuttle. Students also had the exciting opportunity to step inside and experience what it feels like to wear a real spacesuit!
This week, Mr. Carlson and Mrs. Estep’s classes took their first trip to STARBASE on Wednesday. Students had an exciting day learning all about energy and how to program robots to move.
It was a great start to their STARBASE adventure, and they’re already looking forward to their next visit.
Kinetic Energy in Action in Mr. Fleser’s Class
Mr. Fleser’s 8th grade science students explored how mixing hot and cold liquids demonstrates energy transfer. They observed how the kinetic energy of molecules relates to temperature, gaining a hands-on understanding of how heat moves.

Never Forget: Poems from 7th Grade
Although September 11 has passed, our 7th grade students wrote poems to honor and remember the day. Some students wanted to share their work, and we’ll be featuring those poems each week in the newsletter. These poems were created in Mrs. Ferguson’s and Mrs. Podolan’s classes. We look forward to sharing a few each week until all have been shared with our school community.

One last goodbye
It started as a clear sky
Not a cloud in sight
Until flight 11
It struck the north tower
At 8:46 a.m.
Smoke covered the sky
Fire builds on the side of the tower
Less than 20 minutes later
Flight 175 hits the south tower
At 9:03 a.m.
People jumping from the towers
People crying
Sirens blare as firetrucks pass
And then
9:59 a.m.
The south tower collapsed. People sprint from left to right
The big cloud of dust covers the city
Clouded lungs from the dust of the building
Then at 10:28 a.m.
The north tower collapsed
A herd of dust comes fast again
Like a sand storm
More people dying
Jumping out of each floor
Brave people
who just wanted to go to work that day
Turned into a horror film of disaster
People running across Brooklyn Bridge
To save their lives
Mothers and fathers wish they could hug their child one last time
Kids crying in school are scared of their family
A sister, brother, mom, dad, anybody with fear
That day was a tragedy and pain
Blood, sweat, and tears were shed that day
If only they could say one last goodbye

If Only
If only I could hold your hand
And take you away from the fight,
If only I could see your smile one last time,
And have no last tear drop from your eye.
I’d carry you away from that awful journey,
And hold you as tight as I can.
If only I’d listen to you more and stop what I'm doing,
I'd do everything with you, hobbies, sports, and whatever else
If only I could see the true you and be with you at all times.
I would work, have fun, and do whatever you want
If only I was there for you.
If only
