A Message from Mr. Hartman

Wow – where did the year go! It is hard to believe that we have fewer than 30 school days before summer break is here, and as quickly as this spring is passing by, the month of May is sure to go even faster. Please know that our staff and students have been working extremely hard these last several months, and I am confident they will enjoy the remaining weeks of the school year.

As we approach the week of May 8th-12th (Staff Appreciation Week) I want to take this opportunity to recognize our staff at Bloomer Elementary for their extra efforts, flexibility and extended time that they put in this year for a number of reasons. The work of our staff combined with the efforts that parents and families have made this year have served our students well. It goes without saying that we use a TEAM approach at BES in helping all of our students succeed, and that TEAM mentality was certainly on display this year!

As we look ahead to the summer and next school year, I am optimistic about the direction our school is headed. With that being said, every season and each year present us with new and unique challenges. As Principal, I am confident that with continued parent support and involvement, and with the staff that we’ve assembled here we will get our kids to reach their full potential – regardless of the challenges we face. There is no question that Bloomer Elementary is an amazing place to learn, work and grow!!

2023-24 School Calendar

The School District of Bloomer is sharing the 2023-24 school calendar early this year to encourage families to plan vacations around already scheduled school vacations. Consistent school attendance is critical to student success, not just academically, but for social/emotional health. Considerable school absences not only cause students to fall behind academically but can also cause anxiety issues when returning to school, due to excessive work that needs to be made up and critical academic information missed while absent. Please consider this calendar when planning your family vacations next year. Thank you; we look forward to working with you to help ensure all aspects of your child's success.

4K Egg Hunt

Thank you to all the Bloomer Elementary 4K families for providing candy for the 4K egg hunt! The 4Kers made Easter baskets out of milk jugs and came together to find eggs! Happy Easter from 4K!

Bloomer Elementary Partners in Education

BES PIE kicked off the Spell-a-Thon at the end of March. Students had the opportunity to collect pledges, begin studying their words and testing took place in mid-April. Thank you to all those who participated in collecting pledges!! Those efforts raised over $9,000!

Looking back, we kicked off the year with the first annual Mini-Hawk Hustle and the promotion of spirit wear. PIE hosted other events including Santa and a Movie and the Family Sweetheart Dance, sponsored the Literacy Night and 3 book fairs, participated in the trick or treat on main street, and provided meals for the staff during parent/teacher conferences and teacher appreciation week. PIE also teamed up with the Bloomer Moose Lodge as well as Dairy Queen for additional fundraising efforts. The last DQ night of the year will be May 23! 10% of the proceeds are donated back to PIE!

As we are nearing the end of the 2022-2023 school year, the BES Partners in Education would like to sincerely thank the teachers, staff, students and community members! This was a successful year as we were able to raise $26,000. This would not have been possible without your support!

The funds raised this year by PIE have provided multiple student experiences that otherwise may not have been possible. This includes supporting 12 field trips in addition to the 4th grade trip to the Minnesota Zoo, an assembly with a performing magician and a visiting artist for the upcoming Art Show. Funds have also been utilized to purchase book display bins for the library, drum stands, an incredibox subscription and other music materials. In addition to this, PIE is planning to purchase a projection screen for the gym as well as a gaga ball pit in hopes to be able to use in the upcoming school year!

Save the dates for our upcoming meetings!! Monday, June 19, 6 PM at the Bloomer Brewery and Tuesday, August 1, 6 PM at BES will be the next two meetings. The PIE board members extend a welcoming invitation for anyone who would like to attend as we will begin planning for the 2023-2024 school year. We also invite you to join our Facebook group (Bloomer Elementary PIE (Partners in Education)) to stay up to date all the happenings!

Again, on behalf the Bloomer Elementary Partners in Education board, thank you to all those who supported PIE, volunteered at events, donated time and/or money and to those who attended the events. PIE would not be a success without your ongoing support!

“Savor the moments…your child will travel this path just once…”

Upcoming classroom Guidance lessons in May will continue to be built around the Wisconsin Social Emotional Learning Competencies, specifically centered on the areas of Emotional Development (understanding and manage one’s emotions), Self-Concept (develop positive self-identity and recognize self as a learner) and Social Competence (establish and maintain positive relationships). The next few weeks, we will focus our attention on decision-making and self-awareness. Specifically, students will learn to identify strategies to persist when working toward short- and long-term goals, to work through setbacks when working toward a goal, to show awareness of being part of a larger community, to identify actions that would positively impact change and more! Included in these lessons will be discussing how people choose a career (matching interests, personalities and abilities), how people find jobs, being a good worker and much, much more! The emphasis of this unit is certainly not for the students to decide at this age what they want to be when they grow up (although it is fun to hear what they imagine!), but to get them looking ahead to their futures by setting goals, working hard, making good choices, etc. We will also be using a software program called Xello for Elementary designed to “spark student curiosity about the future” and help them build a foundation for their future. Through this program, students will explore life and career development, helping set themselves up for smoother transitions in life and school. Dream Big, kiddos! 😊

I encourage all families to enroll their children in our wonderful Summer School program, whether for remedial course work or enrichment opportunities, these offerings are a great chance for kids to stay active in their learning and interact with their classmates while school is not in session. 😊

This month, we bid farewell to our School Counseling interns, Miss Lau, Miss Fernandez and Mr. Dachel. We have appreciated their time here and all of the help and support they have given to our students and school community. We wish them all the best as they look ahead to their next journey!

The Counseling department offers many terrific resources for parents covering a wide range of topics. Some of these resources are available for parents to keep and others are available for checkout. Featured resources this month include: Moving On To Middle School-a DVD for parents and students facing this transition, Who’s Raising Your Child? Battling The Marketers For Your Child’s Heart and Soul by Laura J. Buddenberg, Parenting On The Go-Effective Strategies For The Busy, Devoted Parent by L. Tobin and Parents Do Make A Difference by Michele Borba, PhD. Additionally, the counseling office has several pamphlets and informational sheets regarding many aspects of SUMMER SAFETY for families. Please stop in and take a look or visit the website https://healthywithpardee.com/summer-safety-tips-for-parents/ for “15 Summer Safety Tips.” 😊

With summer vacation approaching, consider what to do with extra time you may have with your kiddos. Play a 20 question game with one another, get to know each other better. Plan a weekly field trip together (your own backyard, The Children’s Museum, local parks). Wherever you go, go together! Enjoy discovering the world around you. Have a backyard sleepover. Count stars. Make wishes for the future of your family together. Most importantly, enjoy the gifts you are to one another. 😊 For more ideas, visit the link below for “125 Of The Best Family-Friendly Summer Activities.” https://parade.com/1245931/marynliles/summer-activities/

Wishing you a SAFE, FUN and WONDERFUL summer! 😊 “In the summer, the days were long, stretching into one eachother…everything was on pause and yet happening at the same time-this collection of weeks when anything was possible.” ~Sarah Dessen
