The Check-In: January - The Reset
The Power of Saying "No" (Without Being Mean) 🛑✋
We are one month into the semester! By now, you might feel like your calendar is controlling you, rather than the other way around.
Between homework, clubs, friends, and family, it’s easy to say "yes" to everything until you crash. This week, we are talking about the most underrated skill in high school: Boundaries.
The Science: Opportunity Cost ⚖️
In economics (and in life), there is a concept called Opportunity Cost. It means that for every single thing you say "Yes" to, you are automatically saying "No" to something else.
The Data: Your brain has a limited amount of "Executive Function" (the fuel used for making decisions and focusing) each day. When you spend it all on drama or things you don't care about, you have nothing left for what actually matters.
The Takeaway: When you agree to facetime a friend until 2 AM, the "cost" isn't just time—it’s the sleep and focus you need for tomorrow. Spend your energy like you spend your money: wisely.
Weekly Challenge: The "Polite Decline" 🤐
Saying no is awkward. We worry people will be mad at us. But protecting your peace is not selfish; it's necessary.
The Challenge: Identify one thing this week that drains your battery (a favor you don't have time for, an extra shift at work, or just scrolling TikTok when you should be sleeping). Practice saying "No" to it.
Try these scripts if you feel awkward:
"I'd love to hang out, but I'm totally drained and need to recharge tonight."
"I can't take that on right now, my plate is full."
"I'm focusing on school this week, so I'm skipping [Event].".
