Hardman's Happenings

Hello Oak Hill Families!

Happy Fall and what a beautiful Fall it has been! With the first quarter ending on Friday, October 3rd, Parent-Teacher Conferences were held on Wednesday, October 15th across all schools. I hope you were able to connect with your child’s teacher(s). These conversations are such a valuable opportunity to celebrate progress and discuss ways to support learning at home. If you weren’t able to attend, I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher via email to check in on their progress. Staff contact information can be found in our staff directory on the Oak Hill School website. If you have not done so, you are able to check your child's report card by going to your Skyward Family Access account and clicking on the Portfolio tile. That will take you to the attachments in your child's Skyward account which will include a link to your child's 1st quarter report card. You are able to download it and/or view it.

Our three summer building projects are also nearing completion! The cap on the junior high roof is being installed this week, which will mark the end of that project. The new dehumidification system in the high school pool is up and running, with only the installation of the insulation left to complete. At the elementary schools, playground installation began last week at Swayzee Elementary and will continue district-wide, with all new equipment expected to be ready by Thanksgiving break.

I hope you’re all enjoying the start of fall break! Whether you’re traveling or taking time to relax at home, I hope this week brings rest, fun, and quality time together as a family. A reminder that there will be no school Monday, October 20th through Friday, October 24th, and classes will resume on Monday, October 27th.

Enjoy your break and thank you, as always, for your continued support of Oak Hill Schools!

Yours in Education,
Sheri Hardman
OHUSC Superintendent

Sweetser Snapshot

We have officially completed the first nine weeks of the 2025–2026 school year! 🎉 It’s hard to believe how much we’ve accomplished together this quarter. From each grade level taking their first field trip, to successfully completing our first ILEARN Checkpoint, and wrapping up our chocolate fundraiser sale—there’s so much to celebrate!

Our fourth graders participated in an exciting egg drop competition that tied directly to their science standards. With the help of the Marion Fire Department (C Shift, Station 6), students had the opportunity to test their designs with drops from the fire truck—first at 40 feet and then at a thrilling 70 feet! Congratulations to all the students whose eggs survived this massive drop, and a huge thank-you to the Marion Fire Department for making this memorable experience possible. 🥚🚒👏

Meanwhile, third grade classes took a trip to the Fort Wayne Zoo, where students had the incredible opportunity to see some of the animals they’ve been studying in the classroom up close and in real life. This hands-on experience brought their learning to life and deepened their understanding of animal life cycles and habitats. 🐅🦒🐒

We’re so proud of the hard work, curiosity, and enthusiasm our students have shown this quarter. Here’s to a fantastic start to the school year and even more exciting learning experiences to come!

Best,
Jennifer Switzer, Sweetser Elementary Principal

Playground Update

We get it . . . this is exciting and when your children see piles of dirt, construction equipment, and the promise of a fun playground, they want to explore it. In the interest of safety though, I need your help in keeping your children safe. Until the playground is completely finished and open for use, please keep your children off of the playground area. There are lots of parts of playground equipment out there, holes being dug for posts, uneven ground and debris from the demo. It’s going to be amazing when it is finished, but for now, it is closed.

Chromebook Usage

Families, please remember that student Chromebook activity is actively monitored through our Linewize system. When a student types or searches inappropriate content, the system automatically takes a screenshot and sends it to the administrator for review. We encourage you to take a few minutes to discuss appropriate and responsible Chromebook use with your child. Working together, we can help ensure that technology remains a safe and positive learning tool for all students.

Outsiders Day at the Junior High

8th grade students enjoyed Outsiders Day on Friday, September 19. Early in the day, students participated in a digital breakout and ate a chocolate cake (favorite food of the Outsiders) that they made in PCC. Later, they performed skits, songs, poems, and dances from the 1960s. Students were fortunate to experience a classic car show (thanks to parents/grandparents) and were treated to a Beatles' medley performance from the HS show choir. Toward the end of the day, students watched the Outsiders film in the lecture area, comparing the book to the movie production. Lastly, the 8th graders got to enjoy a "rumble" in the upper gym. Special thanks to Ms. Stanley (choir), Mrs. Thomas (PCC), and Mr. Shugart (PE) for their help as well as the entire 8th-grade staff.

Oak Hill Junior High “Spirit Week”

Even though our staff and students worked hard this past 9 week grading period, we still took time to have fun and promote school spirit. During the high school homecoming week, Oak Hill Junior High had its own “spirit week”. The Oak Hill Junior High Student Council (Brynley Thomas and Jamie Moore - Sponsors) organized daily activities consisting of a “school spirit” theme which also incorporated the junior high’s own “Spirit Week” games. The students and staff did a great job showing off their school pride and their participation was tremendous. It was an awesome week of school pride!

If you are 17 or 18, you only need the half sheet permission slip turned in. Let Mrs. Hewitt know if you have any questions!!

Oak Hill Red Cross Blood Drive Schedule

From the HS Librarian

Hello Parents/Guardians of OHHS Students,

Thank you for supporting your student(s) and our staff so far this school year. We feel it's been a successful first quarter and we look forward to having an even better year ahead. To help your student be prepared, specifically with a charged Chromebook, for his/her return to school on Monday, October 27, 2025 we have provided some guidance.

Over the Fall Break, please follow these directions to help ensure your Chromebook works as expected when you return to class on October 27, 2025.

On the first evening of break:

  1. Charge your Chromebooks so that the battery is at 100% and fully charged.
This ensures that even when the battery discharges while unplugged over the break, it won’t run out of power.

  2. Turn off Bluetooth, mute the volume, shut down the Chromebook, unplug it from a power source, and store it in a safe place.

A few days before classes resume, get the Chromebooks ready for class:

  1. Power up your device and if necessary, charge your Chromebooks so that the battery is at 100% and fully charged again.

REMEMBER: Your chromebook is only charging correctly when there is a visible light on the charger, a light on your device (usually the upper right corner above the keyboard) and a lightning bolt in the battery icon on the screen by the time display.

  1. Connect your Chromebooks to Wi-Fi and update them to the latest Chrome OS release, if necessary.

  2. Store the device safely in a spot where it will not be forgotten on the first day back to school.

Any issues with your device that occur over break should be brought into the library on Monday morning, October 27, 2025.

Thanks for following these suggestions.

Have a wonderful Fall Break!

Thanks!

Gwen Hembrock
