Campion College Newsletter
Week Ten, Term Two: 22 June - 28 June 2026
KARAKIA
Loving God,
You call each of us to lead not through power or status, but through humble service.
Just as Jesus washed the feet of His disciples,
teach us to lead with compassion, courage, and humility.
Help us to place the needs of others before our own,
to listen before we speak, and to serve before we seek recognition.
Grant us wisdom to make decisions that are just,
hearts that are open to every person we encounter,
and strength to lead with integrity, especially when the path is difficult.
May we be leaders who inspire hope, build community,
and reflect Your love in all that we do.
Help us to recognise the dignity and gifts of every person,
encouraging them to flourish and become all You have created them to be.
As we carry out our responsibilities today,
may our leadership always be rooted in service,
guided by faith, and centred on Christ.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Tēnā koutou parents, students, staff, and whānau,
There have been many highlights around the College this week, but what has stood out to me most is not necessarily what our students have achieved. It is the way they have chosen to serve others.
One of the joys of working in a school is seeing our young people use their gifts to make a difference for others. This week, our Service Chef students did exactly that as they prepared and served a delicious morning tea for members of the Catholic Women's League. Today, our Master Chef students showed that same spirit as they treated staff to a wonderful morning tea. It wasn't simply the quality of the food that stood out, but the pride, generosity and care with which it was prepared and shared.
Yet it wasn't only these occasions that caught my attention. Throughout the week, I noticed the quieter moments that often go unseen: students helping classmates, encouraging teammates, supporting teachers, and simply taking the time to make someone else's day a little easier.
It reminded me that service is rarely about grand gestures. More often, it is found in the ordinary moments: in the willingness to lend a hand, offer encouragement, or put someone else's needs before our own. These small acts are what build a community where everyone feels seen, valued and supported.
At Campion College, service sits at the heart of who we are. Jesus taught that leadership is found not in status, but in serving others with humility and love. That same spirit is reflected in the lives of St Marcellin Champagnat, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and our patron, St Edmund Campion, whose courage, compassion and commitment to others continue to inspire our Catholic community today.
As we move towards the end of the term, I encourage each of us to look for one opportunity each day to serve someone else. It may be as simple as offering encouragement, helping a classmate, checking in on a friend, or taking the time to genuinely listen. These small acts may seem insignificant on their own, but together they shape the kind of community we are all proud to belong to.
Perhaps this is what our values of Commitment, Community and Compassion look like when they are lived each day, not in extraordinary moments, but in ordinary acts of kindness, generosity and service.
Thank you to our students, staff and whānau for the many ways you serve Campion College each day. Your generosity, kindness and willingness to put others first are a wonderful reflection of the values we strive to live.
Yours in Christ
Karyn Sadler

YOUTH MASS AND YOUTH GROUP
All students and their whānau are warmly invited to join us for our next Youth Mass and Youth Group this Saturday, 27 June. Youth Mass will begin at 6.00 pm at St Mary's Star of the Sea Church. Following Mass, students are invited to Campion College for Youth Group, which will run until 8.30 pm. The evening will include games, activities, great company and, of course, a BBQ.
This week, we are asking students to bring a small koha towards the sausage sizzle if they are able. All proceeds will go directly towards supporting our Alpha Youth Programme, helping us continue to provide opportunities for our young people to grow in faith, friendship and community.
We look forward to sharing the evening with you.
ALPHA YOUTH
Our Alpha Youth programme continued this week with Session Two and it was wonderful to see another great group of students coming together for an afternoon of kai, friendship and meaningful conversation.
Each week, students share a meal, spend time together, watch a short Alpha video and discuss some of life's biggest questions in a relaxed and welcoming environment. It has been encouraging to see students engaging so openly and respectfully with one another as they explore faith and life together.
A heartfelt thank you to our staff and everyone who helps make Alpha Youth possible. We are also grateful to those who have contributed a koha towards the shared kai. There is still plenty of time for students to get involved. New faces are always welcome, and we encourage anyone who is interested to come along and experience Alpha Youth for themselves.
SERVICE CHEF
Our Service Chef class put their culinary talents to excellent use on Wednesday, preparing and serving a delicious selection of sweet and savoury treats for the Catholic Women's League.
The ladies were absolutely blown away by the quality of the food, the skill and creativity demonstrated by our students, and, most importantly, the warm hospitality they received. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to showcase not only the practical skills they have developed in the kitchen, but also the importance of service and manaakitanga.
The Catholic Women's League contributes so much to our parish and wider community, and it was a privilege for our students to give back in this way.
MASTER CHEF
Our Master Chef class certainly impressed the Campion College staff on Friday, preparing a spectacular morning tea filled with an incredible selection of sweet and savoury delights.
The standard of the food was exceptional, showcasing the students' creativity, skill and attention to detail. The portions were so generous that there was plenty left to enjoy at lunchtime—and even enough to keep us going into the afternoon! It certainly made for a very happy staffroom.
A huge congratulations to our students for the pride, professionalism and hospitality they demonstrated. Experiences like these provide authentic opportunities to develop not only outstanding culinary skills but also the confidence and service that are so important within the hospitality industry.
A heartfelt thank you to our students and teaching staff for treating us to such a memorable (and delicious!) day.
The kai was so good that Mr Sparks wanted to take some home!
YCC DAY
We are excited to once again host our annual Mufti Day and Lunchtime Concert on Wednesday 1 July. Last year's event was a fantastic success, with students sharing their talents through music, singing, dance, and performance. It was wonderful to see so many students step up, support one another, and entertain the wider school community.
The Lunchtime Concert is a highlight of the year. It provides an opportunity for students to showcase their talents, build confidence, and celebrate the gifts and passions that make our community so special. Students are invited to wear mufti for a gold coin donation. Funds raised will be donated through Caritas and will support Takuilau College in Tonga, the focus school for YCC Day 2026.
We look forward to another memorable day of music, creativity, generosity, and community spirit. Whether performing on stage or cheering on friends from the audience, we encourage everyone to get involved and help make this year's event another great success.

KAINGA SUPER 12 RIBBY FINALS
Our Year 7 and 8 students wrapped up an exciting term of competition on Wednesday with the Kainga PE Super 12 Ribby Finals Day.
Throughout the term, twelve teams from across our three Kāinga have been battling it out each Tuesday afternoon in Ribby – an adapted softball-style game. Teams included the Wacky Wekas, Krazy Kiwis, Kawa Kiwis, L & P Kiwis, Silly Salamanders, Greedy Llamas, Fantastic Fantails, Lazer Kiwis, No Problamas, Sigma Serpents, Wild Wolves and Mighty Monkeys.
After ten weeks of enthusiastic competition, teamwork and plenty of fun, the Kawa Kiwis were crowned the 2026 Kainga Super 12 Ribby Champions. The achievement was celebrated with a shared morning tea, recognising the team's success and the fantastic sportsmanship shown by all students throughout the competition.
Congratulations to the Kawa Kiwis, and well done to every student who took part. It has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm, teamwork and participation throughout the term!
OVERNIGHT TRIPS - OPTIONAL DONATIONS
As students prepare for upcoming overnight trips, we would like to clarify how the optional donation process works. In line with Ministry of Education guidelines, donations for overnight trips are voluntary. However, these contributions play an important role in helping the College meet the costs of providing these valuable learning opportunities. We encourage all families who are in a position to contribute to do so.
To help make trips as affordable as possible, fundraising opportunities are offered to all students. Any funds raised by an individual student are credited towards their suggested donation amount, reducing the contribution requested from their family.
Once donations and fundraising proceeds have been received, the College assesses whether there are sufficient funds for the trip to proceed. We are committed to providing enriching learning experiences beyond the classroom, and we greatly appreciate the generosity of our whānau in supporting these opportunities for our students.
SECONDARY GIRLS' BADMINTON TOURNAMENT
Our Campion College girls represented the College with pride at the Secondary Girls' Badminton Tournament held at the Gisborne Badminton Centre today.
Throughout the day, our students demonstrated determination, resilience and excellent sportsmanship as they competed against schools from across the region. They supported one another, embraced the challenges of competition and represented Campion College with pride both on and off the court.
Congratulations to all of our players on their efforts, and thank you to everyone who supported the team throughout the day.
