We Know The Snow Is There

While we did not get outside this week, we are looking forward to the temperature improving and getting into the new, super deep snow. Many of us (including me as a parent) pulled back on sending the snow gear, so please make sure to remember it when we come back next week. I hope the kids are enjoying the snow at home!

We are approaching our planning period for this year's MCAS. While the final dates are still being solidified, students in grades 3-5 should plan on testing between April 1st and May 15. Just to review, students in grades 3 & 4 will have ELA and Math assessments. Grade 5 students will have both of those previously mentioned tests, plus Science. More information will be sent to families once the dates are finalized which should be shortly.

Music Room News

Kindergarteners have been busy learning how to read and play color-coded music notes on our Boomwhackers, which are different colored and sized plastic tubes hit on one hand, each having its own pitch. Ask your child which song is their favorite that we have played so far!

1st & 2nd graders have been learning how to play the melody and chords of songs simultaneously on our Boomwhackers, which are colored plastic tubes hit with the hand. Ask your child to explain what the difference is between the melody and chords of a song!

3rd, 4th, & 5th graders are wrapping up their songwriting unit, where students compose their own 4-measure song and then play it on our xylophones and metallophones. This unit reinforces their note-reading skills, which carry over into the playing of other instruments. Ask your child the elements needed in writing a song!

3rd graders will also begin learning how to play the Recorder instruments during their February music rotation. The Recorder is a woodwind instrument that will help them in learning how to play and read pitches for potential future instruments. Pink permission forms have been sent home to parents, which has all of the information about the instrument, which are free of charge to all 3rd graders, and theirs to keep forever! Be sure to sign and return the bottom portion of the form to your child’s teacher, so that your child can be issued an instrument during their February rotation of music. Any questions, please contact Mrs. Lordan: mlordan@awrsd.org
