Literacy Cycles
Teachers -- We need you to sign up for literacy cycle. Click on the link below and sign up. You can also see what standards other teachers focused on and how long their cycles were. The duration of cycles you can decide on with Dodie.
Steps:
- Click on the link below and see what others have done or are doing.
- Select a standard that you would like focus on and put it on the line next to your name.
- Dodie will reach out to you. Keep in mind that Dodie can only do a few cycles at a time. When you decide what standard(s) you would like to focus on and she will give you an idea the dates or timeframe she connect with you. Dodie and I will work on a long range plan and map out the cycles.
Grade 4 teachers are not required to do literacy cycles according to the state of Indiana.
Please identify the standard you would like to focus on by Friday, February 28th. Thank you!
The coaching moves above are examples of some of the things you will be doing during your literacy cycle. We are excited for these upcoming cycles. The work that we do with the literacy cycles are helping our students.
NIET - Teaching and Learning Rubric Connections
The indicators and descriptors below are those that we are focusing on as we work on making learning visible for and with students.
Standards & Objectives
- All learning objectives and state content standards, and their connections to student work expectations, are explicitly communicated and understood by all students.
Presenting Instructional Content
- Criteria that clarifies how students can be successful.
Thinking
- Students monitor their thinking to ensure they understand what they are learning, are attending to critical information, and are aware of the learning strategies they are learning and why.
"The purpose of education should not be to help students reach their full potential. The prime purpose of education is to help students exceed what they think is their potential. To see in students something they may not see in themselves and to imbue them with our passion for learning."
John Hattie - The 10 Mindframes for Visible Learning
Developing High Functioning Teams
The work we do in our PLC's need to connect to the questions below. Please keep them in mind when you are collaborating and planning.
Cluster PLC
This week:
- How are we responding to students who are showing growth or mastery in a concept or skill? How are we providing enrichment or acceleration for our higher achieving students?
- 3x3 Power Standards
- Continuums
- Are we using PLD's from the state?
- Are we tracking students? What is the data showing?
Grade Level PLC
This week:
All PLC's will be on Tuesday this week due to the Eureka math coach being at PV on Wednesday all day.- Grade 2 -IREAD - new updates and looking at the testing manual/schedule
- Grade 3 - IREAD - new updates and looking at the testing manual/schedule
- Grade 4 - ILEARN & student performance
- Planning for Math
- Thinking -
- How can we help our students think about what they are learning?
- How can we help them analyze questions?
- How can we make their thinking visible?
Family Engagement
Communication
- Please be sure you are communicating with parents about their child's academics. In a recent study, 90% of parents thought their child was on grade level. We want to help parents understand how their child is performing academically, but also be mindful how we communicate this with them.
- For example - Talking to parents via email and Parent Square is simple and easy. However, emails and messages can be inferred in various ways like the tone, the specific words used, etc. Often times, adults/families voice strong opinions when messaging. Most of the time when meeting face to face or talking over the phone, those strong opinions and behaviors diminish and a partnership is being developed.
- I know it is easier and more time efficient to message or email.
- All I ask is you think about the goal or purpose of the communication and what communication tool would be best. (phone call, meeting, email, or message)
- Please be mindful when you are contacting parents. I know it seems easy to contact parents during the day especially on Parent Square. However, a lot of our families work. I am not suggesting anyone is doing anything wrong. All I ask is that you keep it in mind.
Positive Messages to Parents
- I challenge you to reach out to 2-4 families a week. Send a positive Parent Square Message or make a quick positive phone call. We want to welcome parents as partners in their child's education. Keeping an open line of communication whether positive or negative is always important.
Thank you for trying to do positive messages as often as you can. The stronger our partnerships with our families, the better support we will see.

Family Friendly February
We have one more week! Thank you for all your help and support promoting this for PV.
This is the survey that we need families to fill out for the state of Indiana as we are hoping to be recognized as a Family Friendly School.
Student Survey
ILT Team Leaders - please let me know the day and time you plan on doing the survey and if you are partnering with a buddy class. We have until March 1st to get this completed.
I know grade 3 and grade 1 have completed the survey.
Below are two links:
- Student survey - English version
- Student survey - Spanish version
Thank you for doing this!!
Quote and Funny for the Week...
- Student comment after our ambassadors gave out donuts to our car line Friday morning:
- "When I grow up, I am going to get a donut."
- Student - "I know. I have a commercial voice."
- Student - "Why is the mafia in the building?"
- It was maintenance who were in the building. Not the mafia.
Retentions
- If you are thinking of a student who you think might need to be retained, please be sure to also fill out a SST referral. (student support team). We want to be sure to discuss this student and then I will also talk to our lead MTSS Team.
- If you are thinking of a student who may need retention, please fill out the retention form. Thank you!
Staff Recognition & Appreciation
- Marge - Thank you for doing the kindness trees and for the random acts of kindness done this past week. The donuts were a hit!
Eureka Math Coach Visit - February 26th
The Eureka math coach has not been at PV before. She was scheduled to be here on two different occasions, but due to weather, we were unable to have her visit PV. She has visited other schools and it has been helpful from what I hear.
During her time at PV, we will be going in and out of classrooms during your math instructional time. Please do not think we are evaluating you. That is not the case at all. She is here to help support us as we implement the new curriculum.
PSA (3x3) - Power Standard Assessments
PSA - Schedule
Due to the Eureka math coach coming on Wednesday, we have to change days we are testing. I have reached out to our leadership team and our Hawk Team Leaders to ask their thoughts on this situation. I apologize that we have to modify plans for testing. A lot is going on. My apologies.
I will update this section of the newsletter as soon as I have heard back from Hawk Team Leaders or Leadership Team.

Buddy Classes
Buddy Classrooms
- As we get closer to IREAD and ILEARN, we thought it might be nice to have buddy classes to share notes of encouragements, posters, etc. with the classrooms who are testing.
- I know some of you have buddy classes already. In order for us to keep track of things, please fill out the buddy class document. It is only a table where I need you to put your name and your buddy class name. Thank you!
Lock Down
Lock Down Protocol - Postponed
- Tentatively - Friday at 1:30 - but not sure yet.
- We will do our last lock down practice of the year. Please be sure to review the procedures:
- doors are shut and locked
- lights are off
- Pull kids into your classroom from the hall.
- Remind students to go to the nearest classroom if they happen to be out of the classroom.
- Do not open or unlock your door for anyone. (unless you know it is a student.)
Please refer to the PowerPoint below. This is the same one we used for our students when we practiced this prior to Christmas break.
Please let me know how I can help support you during this drill.
Other Important Misc. Items...
Recruitment Fair
- We need a teacher that would be willing to join me on March 4th for the teacher recruitment fair.
- You would be paid for your time. Please send me an email if you are interested. Thank you!!
Related Arts - Library, Art, Music, & PE
- March 21st - Mr. Dubois is tentatively planning time to meet with you on March 21st.
- Jim knows that we need to help the whole child focus and learn. This starts in Kinder and grade 1 for sure. He has some brain development ideas, focusing ideas, etc. to share with you.
- This vision is something he brought to PHM and Jimtown Schools. It is pretty exciting!
- For now, pencil it in for 7:30-8:45 at central office. I am asking Ally to attend with you as well. More information to come.
Counselor Interviews
- We had interviews this past week for a new counselor. (We love you Marge and will miss you!)
- I am waiting on central office for next steps. I will update you when I know more.
Fire Drill
- The fire drill on Friday was one of the best we have had all year. We were able to clear the building in 2 minutes and 50 seconds.
- Reminder that we need all doors shut and we need students to be at level 0. Thank you!
Skyward & Report Cards
- I know there was some issues with report cards the last nine weeks. We have asked central office to help by extending the duration. What this means is you should be able to enter things without a problem. Please make sure you have things entered by March 31st.
- For clarity - Skyward would lock up when the grading period ended. This was an issue because teachers could not enter scores and things in Skyward.
Wit & Wisdom EOM Task Data Entry
- Don't forget to enter students Wit and Wisdom EOM Task data on the spreadsheets I shared with you during our grade level PLC's.
- If you need help, please let me know.
