Attendance Matters! Attendance Matters!

Make attendance important for your family

Did you know?

  • Too many absences in preschool and elementary school can cause children to struggle socially and academically.
  • Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
  • Missing 10% of school (2 days each month) can make it harder to learn to read and do basic math.

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school — and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool and through elementary school so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day, is important.

What can you do?

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots.
  • Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up.
  • Monitor your child’s absences.
  • Try to schedule nonurgent medical appointments and extended trips when school isn’t in session.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • If you are concerned that your child may have a contagious illness, call your school nurse or healthcare provider for advice. Ask the teacher for ideas to support missed learning time.

From Attendance Works:

  • The role of the federal government is to ensure the right of every child in the United States to a free and high quality public education by protecting their civil rights and by providing resources for those in need. The federal government is also responsible for funding that can even the playing field for all students; collecting and then using data and research to describe the condition of the nations’ schools; to promote improved practice; to inform policy; and, to provide guidance for schools, districts and states that support quality improvement.

Attendance is a leading indicator of a student’s opportunity to learn and is a key metric for measuring whether the government is delivering on its promise. The U.S. Department of Education currently collects and reports chronic absence data through its Ed Facts data collection. The inclusion of the provision for states to adopt a school quality indicator, along with more traditional academic measures for accountability in the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA), led 36 states and Washington, D.C. to adopt chronic absence in 2018 as one of their multiple measures of accountability.

Chronic absence remains significantly elevated, and is impacting every state and district in the United States. It has especially affected communities that struggle with poverty. Attendance Works has developed policy recommendations to advance making student absenteeism a priority.

Angel Tree

BES has always been a community that helps each other. Every Christmas we have tried to reach out to families who may be in need. However, we realize that we do not always have the full picture and sometimes the families who really need help due to a tragedy or crisis get overlooked. So, if you are in a position where you need help or know someone in the BES community who may need help this holiday season, we would like to hear from you. Please fill out one form per BES child. Forms are due back by Monday, November 2, 2026. Forms can be found here https://forms.gle/vhMFnUbAPVmWwQD17

Volunteer with us! CCPS uses the Raptor system for volunteers and visitors to sign in and out of schools. All volunteers (anyone interacting with children for activities such as field day, field trips, VIP Day, etc.) will need to review the volunteer handbook, watch the volunteer training video, and apply to be an approved volunteer each year before volunteering in any school. Click HERE to become a volunteer!

It would be very helpful if you applied to be a volunteer as soon as possible, even now when you might have a little extra time in the summer. The application and approval process takes a little time and we have experienced issues where volunteers were not approved in time to chaperone field trips. Don't let that happen to you!

Lost & Found at Beach Elementary Lost & Found at Beach Elementary

We do have a lost and found area at BES, that seems to fill up rather quickly. Families spend a lot of money on jackets and water bottles! Please take some time to put your child's name on their jackets and water bottles so that we can return them. We do purge our lost and found at the end of each month. We donate the unclaimed items so others may use them.
