Solar Eclipse April 8th Solar Eclipse April 8th

The Eclipse will Begin at School Dismissal

A Solar Eclipse is expected on Monday April 8, 2024 starting at 2:15 pm and will peak at 3:30 pm. It is important to remember health risks such as looking directly at the sun can cause permanent eye damage. Please review and share this information with your children from the department of health. Solar Eclipses

Health Risks

Looking directly at the sun can cause permanent eye damage. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can permanently damage the retinal tissue in your eyes, called solar retinopathy. Even small crescents of the sun are intense enough to cause a retinal burn. There are no pain receptors in the retina, so your retina can be damaged before you realize it or feel any pain.

Athletics During the Eclipse

In preparation of the Solar Eclipse , Please see the information below provided to us by the RIIL. At this time HS athletics is NOT cancelling games and practices. All MS athletics have been cancelled. Please make sure your athletes are well versed in the dangers of looking directly into the sun.

Principals and Athletic Directors….

As you are probably aware, Rhode Island will experience a solar eclipse when the moon will partially cover the sun between 2:15pm and 4:38 pm on Monday, April 8, 2024. This will be visible from all locations in Rhode Island. The maximum eclipse, when just more than 90% of the sun will be blocked, will be at 3:29 pm.

Please note that it is unsafe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing so schools should take necessary safety precautions when scheduling and planning for practices, games and transporting students and teams during this partial solar eclipse.

Please click on the following links for more information about Solar Eclipses and other helpful resources.

While we understand there are a lot of illness going around Scituate and RI right now, we want to encourage our students to come to school everyday if you are not sick. Currently, 15.4% of Scituate High School are deemed "chronically absent" which is determined as 18% of the school year. We currently rank 96th of all schools in RI for chronic absenteeism. Please come to school if you are not sick... we need you!!

Below are interactive leaderboards and resources for absenteeism from the Commissioner and the Governor.

RIDE - Data Activation

Compare current % chronically absent to the same time last year. The change (Δ) indicates whether your chronic absenteeism is increasing or decreasing in a school. * The following 10 LEAs have not submitted attendance data for one or more of their schools to RIDE within the last 3 days.

Behavior Expectations for Fans RIIL Behavior Expectations for Fans RIIL

Behavior Expectations for Fans

Behavior Expectations of Student Groups

• Always provide positive support for your team. Never ridicule or degrade the opposing team or players.

• Conduct yourself in an exemplary manner. Remember that you represent your school both at home and away.

• Assist cheerleaders with yells, chants, etc. Always be a working part of pep assemblies with preparation, organization

and involvement.

• Treat opposing players, coaches, spectators and support groups with respect and enthusiasm. Applaud good

performances on both teams. Doing this will show that you understand and can recognize good performance,

regardless of team affiliation.

• Always display proper sportsmanship toward officials and value their contributions to the game. Respect the

judgments made during a contest. All calls are impartial and should be accepted by all parties.

• Use only positive cheers, signs and chants during a contest. This will show that you understand proper sportsmanship

while giving your organization and school a good reputation.

Behavior Expectations of Spectators

• Always support your team and the efforts of all participants involved.

• Do not intimidate or ridicule a player, coach, or official before, during or after a contest.

• Always praise athletes for their actions during a game; never degrade a participant for their efforts. Athletics are a

learning experience for students, and mistakes will be made.

• A ticket is a privilege to observe the contest, not a license to verbally assault others or be generally obnoxious.

• Learn the rules of the game so that you may understand and appreciate why certain situations take place.

• Always respect the integrity and judgment of officials. They are present to regulate the flow and enforce the rules of

the game. An official should never be degraded or ridiculed for a call they make.

• Show respect for the opposing players, coaches, spectators and support groups. Treat them as guests to your school.

• Use only cheers that support and uplift the teams involved.

• Recognize and show appreciation for an outstanding play by either team.

• Refrain from the use of any controlled substance (alcohol, drugs, etc.) before, during and after the game, on or near

the site of the event (i.e. tailgating).

• Be a positive role model at events through your own actions and by censuring those around you whose behavior is

unbecoming.
