Superintendent's Message Superintendent's Message

Hello LPOSD Families,

One of my favorite times of year is coming up on March 15 – we will be holding elementary school student-led conferences for grades K-6. Students have the opportunity to share details of their school day, academic and behavioral progress, and goals for the remainder of the school year. You will hear directly from them about what they love and what they believe are challenges. Please join us in continuing to make the student-led conferences a HUGE success and note the date on your calendar.

On the same day, Friday, March 15, staff at both Sandpoint Middle School and Clark Fork Jr-Sr High School will be training in preparation for student-led conferences next year; therefore, there will be a non-student day at both of these schools on 3/15 this year. The only students who will have school on Friday, March 15, 2024 are Sandpoint High and LPOHS.

What are the benefits of student-led conferences?

Student Benefits

  • Builds self-confidence and self-efficacy

  • Builds communication and critical thinking skills

  • Allows students to be actively involved in the conference

  • Further empowers student/parent communication

  • Students learn to evaluate their own progress

  • Students learn to take responsibility for their effort and learning

Parent Benefits

  • Learn more about your child’s learning, effort, and progress

  • Provides an opportunity to help your child set positive goals

  • Encourages active participation in communicating about education

  • Eliminates waiting for “your turn” in a conference

  • Allows for more time to communicate with your child at school

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership, bwm

Dr. Becky Meyer, Superintendent

Facilities & Safety

The next video in our series highlighting the four focus areas of the LPOSD 5 Year Strategic Plan covers facilities and safety. The Long Range Facility Planning Committee has been meeting monthly this year to review building conditions and gather facility and financial planning information in order to make a recommendation to the School Board in June this year.

Ensuring the safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. As a reminder, some of the major improvements we have completed this year are:

  • Perimeter Fencing: We've heightened our security with the addition of sturdy perimeter fencing on several of our campuses. Elementary schools are fully enclosed for safety.
  • Controlled Access: Every staff member wears personalized badges, and controlled access has been implemented at every school, along with video monitoring systems.
  • Raptor System: This cutting-edge technology ensures that only authorized and cleared individuals can enter our schools.
  • Intercom and Emergency Notification System Upgrades: 150 intercoms were installed in schools across the district to enhance school wide communication and enable effective safety notifications for all students and staff.
  • MORE UPGRADES COMING SOON! Phase 3 of the safety upgrades will begin in late spring. These will include additional outdoor intercoms and beacon lights.

New Transportation Option Increases Opportunities New Transportation Option Increases Opportunities

LPOSD was able to purchase two activity buses, which will allow our students to participate in events throughout the state. This purchase will save thousands of dollars in transportation costs. Unfortunately, charter buses, which are typically utilized for co/extra-curricular activity trips, have more than doubled their costs over the last few years. These buses will allow us to take part in activities that enhance the student experiences outside of the classroom while limiting our reliance on the inflated cost of charter buses.

This bus is AWESOME!!! We should have been doing this a long time ago. I never want to do anything else!!" - Jon Brownell, SHS Choir Teacher

"Charters have been much more difficult to schedule in recent years, creating increased competition for reservations from neighboring districts and increased costs. The white buses have been an amazing cost saving measure for the district!" - Phil Kemink, Clark Fork High School Principal

CFHS celebrates 100% graduation rate

Last year, Clark Fork High School was one of only a few in the state to achieve a 100% graduation rate with a 23-student cohort size. CFHS principal Phil Kemink expects a similar result this year.

Nixon honored as 'School Hero'

With the help of the Idaho Lottery, Sandpoint Middle School was able to pay tribute to a "School Hero" late last month. It was, for Jennifer Nixon, a surprising start to the morning. The middle school Life Skills paraprofessional was about to take a quick break when Lottery officials surprised her by walking into her room, led by her son.
