News from Candice
Hello CME Families!
I can't believe it's already October! The start of the school year feels like just yesterday, but here we are, watching the leaves begin to change and the days get a little shorter. We had the absolute cutest thing happen this week. Our two favorite retirees, Mr. and Mrs. O came and were subbing for the Kindergarten team in the morning and our 2nd grade team in the afternoon. We are so lucky to have these two as part of our Copper Mesa Community!
Student Leadership Elections
This week, our classroom teachers are conducting elections for student leaders. Each class from 4th to 6th grade gets to pick two representatives. I've truly enjoyed watching some of the speeches this week and seeing our students engage in the electoral process. It's not always easy when we don't win, but our students have been handling it with grace and resilience! Great job to all of them!
Parent Teacher Conferences
The Fall conferences are just around the corner, happening next week! Your teacher should have sent out a sign-up, but if you haven't gotten it yet, please let us know. We always look forward to welcoming you into the building to share all the wonderful things your kids are doing. As a former teacher, I can tell you that connecting with families was one of my favorite parts of the job! I truly hope you'll join us so we can continue to build that important home-school connection.
Our conference late days will be on Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday, all of our staff will be staying late, so please drop in to say hello to our Specials teachers and learning specialists who are such an important part of your child's day.
Bearded Dragons…the saga continues
A few weeks ago, I told you about our student in 1st grade who wanted to bring in her bearded dragons to show her class. Well…the big day was Tuesday. We had so much fun learning about them. I am including some pics below!
With love and gratitude,
Candice

STUDENT LEADERSHIP SPIRIT DAY -
Next Friday, October 10th CME Student Leadership will be having our first spirit day. The theme is College Gear and we want to see students and staff wearing t-shirts, jerseys, hoodies, etc. from their favorite schools. In addition to having fun repping our favorite schools, this is an opportunity to introduce our students to the idea of higher education and get them excited about their future possibilities.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS-
Come join the Copper Mesa Elementary Battle of the Books Club!! Battle of the books is a voluntary reading competition for students in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades. Students who choose to participate will read from a list of 10 books, and will compete by answering questions testing their knowledge of the books read. We will compete as a team against teams from other elementary schools.
Club meetings are most Fridays, beginning November 7th at 7:45 a.m. in Mrs. Hollist’s Classroom
Battles will be held at the Lone Tree Library on a weeknight evening, once a week starting around the last week of January. The official schedule will be posted around Thanksgiving break.
Each child who wants to battle will have to commit to reading 8 of the 10 books on the list. We will talk more about ‘expert books’ as we continue.
Facilitator: Emily Hollist Emily.hollist@dcsdk12.org
*Please direct all Battle of the Books questions to facilitators rather than classroom teachers.
