February 12th, Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-teacher collaboration is a vital part of every student’s "educational journey." Our upcoming February conferences provide the perfect space for those conversations. Teachers may reach out to discuss specific performance goals or celebrate recent achievements. However, if a conference isn’t requested and you have specific concerns or would like an update, we encourage you to schedule a meeting using Conference Manager in your PowerSchool account. If you have any questions, please contact the RCES office at 815-458-2145.

🏫 Every Day Counts: Showing Up Together
A huge shout-out to our amazing RCES families for being the True MVPs of the first half of the season! Because you’ve made attendance a top priority, our team stats are looking better than ever. We are thrilled to report that our year-to-date attendance has climbed to a stellar 95.05%, up from 92.38% last year! This "win" is a direct result of your dedication to getting your students to the starting line every day. Let’s keep this momentum going as we head into the second half! Let’s work together to keep our 'team average' at 95.05% or higher! It’s time to dig deep, stay healthy, and finish this season as Attendance Champions!
Why does being here matter?
Reading Success: Starting as early as Preschool and Kindergarten, being present helps kids build the strong foundation they need to become great readers.
Building Habits: Coming to school on time is a "superpower" skill that helps students feel prepared for the day and sets them up for success all the way through graduation!
Classroom Community: When everyone is here, our whole class can move forward together on exciting new lessons.
Confidence Boost: Regular attendance helps children feel more connected and comfortable at school, which leads to a happier learning experience.
We are so grateful for your partnership in making every school day count!
🌡️ When is Sick "Too Sick" for School?
While we love seeing our students every day, we know that sometimes rest is the best medicine! To keep our classrooms healthy and help your little one recover quickly, please keep your child home if they are experiencing:
Fever: A temperature of 100.4°F or higher. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication) before returning to school.
Vomiting or Diarrhea: Please stay home until it has been at least 24 hours since the last episode.
Persistent Cough: If a cough is disruptive or making it hard to breathe, a day of rest at home is best.
Undiagnosed Rash: Especially if accompanied by a fever or itching.
Pink Eye: If eyes are red, itchy, and have discharge, please check with a doctor before returning.
The "24-Hour Rule"
As a general rule of thumb, students should be symptom-free for a full 24 hours before heading back to the classroom. This helps ensure they have the energy they need for a full day of learning and keeps their friends and teachers healthy, too!
Not sure? When in doubt, feel free to call our school nurse! We are always happy to help you decide what’s best for your child.
If your child is staying home, please call the front office to let our attendance secretary know. Notifying the office directly ensures that your child’s absence is documented accurately in our records.
Our Game Plan: Work Hard and Be Kind.

Math Facts: The Key to unlocking problems!
Learning math facts is a priority for all grade levels at RCES. When students know their facts, they are more confident and able to solve problems. Learning math facts is crucial because they are the building blocks for more advanced math concepts, allowing students to solve complex problems faster and more accurately.
We strongly encourage all families to spend 10 minutes each night working with their children on math facts at home. There are many fun ways to practice: flashcards, math fact games, or even giving kids facts in the car on your way to a practice or the store. Encourage them to get faster each time they practice.
At school, we will practice math facts using a variety of resources. One program we consistently use is called XtraMath. This program will be used for daily practice and to track progress.
Recommended fact practice by grade:
- Kindergarten: Addition and subtraction to 5
- 1st grade: Addition and Subtraction to 10
- 2nd grade: Addition and Subtraction to 12 (3 seconds)
- 3rd grade: Multiplication facts to 10 (3 seconds)
- 4th grade: Multiplication facts to 12 (3 seconds)
- 5th grade: Multiplication and division facts to 12 (3 seconds)
We can’t wait to celebrate our students' hard work! Once a student masters their grade-level facts, they’ll earn a spot on our Math Fact Legend Wall of Fame! Get ready to see those names in lights—let’s see how many Legends we can find this year!
Toys, fidgets, or trading cards
To help keep our classrooms focused and ensure everyone's belongings are safe, we kindly ask that you leave toys, fidgets, and trading cards (such as Pokémon) at home. We have a variety of fun games and equipment available right here at RCES, both in the classrooms and on the playground, for students to enjoy!
Just a heads-up: we can't be responsible for these personal items if they come to school.
Now, there might be special celebration days in your child's classroom when toys are welcome, so be sure to keep an eye out for those exciting announcements from your child's teacher!
Cell Phones
We don't recommend that students bring cell phones to school. However, if your child does bring one, it must be turned off, put away, and kept out of sight for the entire school day.
Just a friendly reminder: we can't be responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged cell phones or other electronic devices. Things like gaming systems should definitely stay at home.
The good news is that every student at RCES has a school-issued device to use for learning throughout the day!
Thanks for your help in keeping our focus on learning and fun at school!
