Teachers of Multilingual Learners
December 2023
There are many exciting things happening right now in GVSD, from the upcoming Arabic Welcome Dinner Night, progress on the diversification of libraries, welcoming newcomer students and the trauma informed practice workshop series with our district counsellors. All across the district, excellent work is being done by teachers. Thank you for all of your work in making and facilitating connections and building relationships with students and their families.
Anti-Racism Resources
An important new resource, Anti-Racism: A Guide for Teachers, is now available. Developed by a team of B.C. IBPoC educators, this guide will give B.C. teachers additional tools and strategies for including anti-racism education in their teaching practices to help foster learning through an anti-racist lens to address discrimination and celebrate diversity.

Communicating Student Progress
With the new reporting order, AIP inserts are no longer recommended by the Ministry of Education. Therefore, there are a few changes to how case managers communicate progress on AIP goals starting this year. Please refer to the documents below for guidance.
Guidelines for all ELL Teachers
For all SD61 ELL teachers who provide supplemental language support from K-12, please refer to the document below on Guidelines for Communicating Progress on AIP goals.
The links below contain instructions specific to K-8 (elementary and middle) and 9-12 (secondary) ELL teachers/case managers on where and how to communicate our students’ learning to parents/caregivers. Please reach out to Jen Barber directly by phone or email with questions.
The IT department has created links to the section within the CSL instructions found on the District website that pertain specifically to ELL. Here they are below for elementary and middle schools.
