Principal's Message

Tomorrow, November 3rd, marks the end of Quarter 1.

Report cards will be emailed the evening of Friday, November 10th. As you know, the Superior School District uses Standards based grading (SBG). With SBG, students have multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency on each standard. It is not uncommon for students to have not yet achieved proficiency (which is a 3) on a standard. Please feel free to reach out to your student’s teachers if you have any questions about their progress. Students will also receive a Spartan Grade for their Spartan Start class. More information on SBG and Spartan Grade can be found here.

Schedule changes for 6th Grade students ONLY. 6th Grade students who have STEM will now have Ind Tec (or vise versa). Students who have FACS kitchen, will now have FACS life skills. This change starts on Monday, November 6th. This schedule change will also show in PowerSchool.

Principal of Superior Middle School

PowerSchool Reminder

Communication about attendance and grades is a top priority each year at the secondary school level. To help facilitate communication, SMS uses an online grade book called PowerSchool. A PowerSchool parent account will allow you to check your student’s progress in school including grades, lunch balance, as well as their attendance.

If you need any assistance with PowerSchool (getting set up, resetting your password, etc), contact Mrs. Brown any time via email at kristin.brown@superior.k12.wi.us

PBIS

All staff hand out Spartan Tickets to students who are showing Work, Respect, Belong at SMS. They have the opportunity to "spend" their Spartan Tickets at a store that is now open. If you would like to help promote positive behavior at SMS, we have created an Amazon Wish List here. Any donations are appreciated.

October was a busy month! Our Spartan Start time focused on Bullying Prevention and how ALL students have Superpowers that can be used to prevent and stop bullying and harassment. We learned about the “Bystander Effect” and talked about why it happens in large crowds/groups (ask your middle schooler about it…it’s very interesting!) Additionally, all students in grades 6-8 received a lesson on Harassment and Sexual Harassment in September. These are just some of the ways we are working hard to provide a safe and welcoming environment. But we need your help!

Often, when we talk about bullying and harassment, we focus on the victim and how bullying affects them. Rarely, when prompted “Raise your hand if you bully and harass others” do middle school students raise their hand. Statistics show that 3 out of 5 kids report bullying but there are NO actual bullies??! Doesn’t make sense. We know that kids can be cruel (there are literally thousands of books written about adolescents). We know that adults do not always model kind and respectful behavior. We know our kids are exposed to FAR MORE than at any time in history. We know civility and respect has eroded in our society. It makes sense that we are going to see this seep into our schools. Our kids are going to model the behavior they see.

My Child is a Bully: What Should I Do? is a great article published by the Child Mind Institute. Please take a moment to read it. We are the village. We need to show our kids compassion, love, acceptance and respect. We need to model that at home, in the community, and online. We need to work together to raise healthy and whole children.
