Partnering for Attendance Success

Dear Parents and Guardians,

In classical education, we talk a lot about building habits of excellence. One of the most foundational habits for your child's academic success is consistent attendance.

Because our high school operates on a block schedule, our 90-minute classes offer incredible depth, allowing students the time they need to truly comprehend and master the material. However, this means time away from class carries more weight. Because of our schedule, missing just one 90-minute period counts as a full day of absence for that course.

To help us partner together in keeping your student on track, please keep these essential guidelines on your radar:

  • The 20-Absence Rule: If a student accumulates 20 or more absences in a single course, they are at risk of loosing course credits from that class due to missed instructional time.

  • The Warning Letters: The school will automatically mail out official attendance alerts at 3, 6, and 10 days of cumulative absences.

  • The 10-Day Conference: Once a student reaches 10 absences, a mandatory parent conference must be held so we can meet, look at the root causes, and build a support plan together.

  • The 5-Day Grace Period: When your child returns to school after being sick or away, they must turn in a formal note to excuse the absence within 5 school days.

  • The Note Cap: Please note that the school can accept a maximum of 10 parent or doctor notes total per semester to officially excuse absences.

We are here to support you. Life happens, and sometimes getting to school consistently can become a hurdle. You and your student do not have to handle it alone. If your family is facing challenges with attendance, please reach out to me directly or email me. Let’s collaborate on a plan and connect you with the right resources to ensure your child can show up strong.

School, Level Up—What is a 504 Plan?

Ever feel like a medical condition, severe anxiety, or something like ADHD is making it harder to show up and do your best in class? You might need a 504 Plan.

A 504 Plan isn't extra homework or special education classes. Think of it like a custom gaming setup for your academics—it changes the settings in the classroom to give you a fair shot at succeeding. It formally ensures you get the specific accommodations you need to level the playing field.

What do these accommodations look like?

  • More time to finish tests or big assignments.

  • A specific seat in class (like near the front, or close to the door).

  • Brain breaks to step out and reset if you get overwhelmed.

  • Permission to visit the nurse or use specific tech when needed.

If you have a diagnosed physical or mental health condition (like ADHD, anxiety, depression, asthma, or diabetes) that gets in the way of your learning, a 504 Plan can protect you and back you up.

Want to talk about it? If you think a 504 plan could help you, or if you already have one and want to make sure your teachers are using it, email me or stop by my office. Let's get you the setup you deserve!
