Need To Know... Need To Know...

Lex 2 CTE Programs

Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs provide industry foundational knowledge and align with hands-on industry skills development. CTE students earn industry recognized certifications and have work-based learning experiences to connect school to the real world of work. Built into L2IC CTE programs are work-based learning experiences promoting employer engagement opportunities initiating networking and soft skills development. Click on 2026-2027 CTE Pathways and Required Courses to discover the CTE pathways offered in Lexington Two, and learn what it takes to become a CTE Program Completer.

CTE Pathway Certifications

Lexington Two CTE programs align with the South Carolina Department of Education (SC SDE) criteria. This includes course pathways, curricular, certifications and work-based learning experiences. The SC SDE has moved to tiered credentials in addition to course sequence to be considered a CTE Pathways Completer. In addition to completing a sequence of 2026 - 2027 CTE Pathways and Required Courses successfully, specific Certifications by Course will need to be earned to be considered a CTE Completer. These certifications are industry recognized skills.

Work-Based Learning

Work-based learning (WBL) refers to structured educational programs that integrate real-world work experiences into a student's learning to successfully transition from high school into employment and lifelong learning. All Lexington Two students are eligible to participate in WBL experiences. WBL provides opportunities to visit worksites within the community, engaging employers and mastering employability skills by:

  • Exploring careers of interests on-site

  • Expanding classroom knowledge and skills with relevent industry partnerships

  • Empowering with hands-on work experiences and universal foundational employability skill

The WBL experience may be individual or a group or class. The following are the most common WBL experiences: Structured Field Study, Job Shadow, Internship, Mentorship, and Apprenticeship. There is a process and procedures for each type of WBL experience. All require a signed parent/guardian form with specific expectations listed for each WBL experience and permission to participate.

Essential Skills

Essential skills are the interpersonal skills needed by everyone to be successfully employed. These basic characteristics are needed across all industries from entry level to owner/Chief Executive Officer. Along with good technical understanding and subject knowledge, employers often outline a set of skills they are seeking in an employee. These are also known as soft skills, professional skills or employability skills. When students enter the building the mindset is work: dressed appropriately, wearing student ID, devices put away. L2IC students develop universal skills:

Attendance - Arrive on time. Prepared to learn.

Dress Code - Dressed appropriately for industry.

Attitude - Ready to learn. Ready to work. Positive. Helpful.

Communicate - Verbally, written and digitally with respect and integrity.

Participate - Actively engage. Work as a team member. Follow instructions.

Employer Partnerships Employer Partnerships

Employer partnerships align Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs with real market needs and give students direct, hands-on work experience. These relationships are needed with local businesses and industry leaders to ensure the CTE programs align with industry standards, provide work-based learning opportunities, and develop a reliable talent pipeline to meet workforce demands locally, statewide and beyond.

Are you an employer? Are you hiring? Part-time, full-time or seasonal employees? Seeking candidates for internships, apprenticeships or employment? Reach out to me, Kimberly Plowden, Work-Based Learning Coordinator, to connect.

Demand For Skilled Trades

"There's a growing shortage of skilled trade workers in the US as demand rises, according to a Lightcast report. Job openings are expected to reach 2.1 million annually, with only one qualified worker for every three jobs. More than one-quarter of skilled-trade workers are over 55, and the new supply of electricians, technicians and other skilled professionals is not keeping pace with retirements. Most of these jobs have low exposure to AI automation, making them relatively secure amid a boom in infrastructure and manufacturing investment."

"The pay rate for a skilled trade job is about $13,000 more annually than the median salary for other jobs that don’t require a four-year degree, the report said.”

There are three skilled trade job openings for every qualified worker. HR DIVE, DIVE BRIEF, Published Aug. 28, 2026. Lara Ewen Contributor. © 2025 TechTarget, Inc. or its subsidiaries. All rights reserved. An Informa PLC company. Go Ahead, Call HR SmartBrief. August 31, 2026.
