Together We Rise: Updates from the Principal

9/20/2025

A Message from Dr. Delgado:The change in seasons is upon us—on Monday, September 22nd at 1:19 p.m., the Autumnal Equinox officially marks the beginning of fall. And here at Westview Middle School, you can already feel the crisp energy of the season in the air!

Fall at Westview is always a time full of excitement and opportunity. We are in full swing with football and volleyball seasons, and our district region choir camp along with fall choir and band concerts are just around the corner. Our Wildcat Band is preparing for a special Middle School Band Night with the CHS band, and this week we are thrilled to announce our very own school homecoming celebration. On top of it all, Fall Picture Day is right around the corner, capturing memories of this busy and spirited time of year.

While we remain deeply focused on strengthening our skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic, we also believe in the importance of weaving in moments of joy, tradition, and school pride. Academic growth and community spirit go hand in hand at Westview, and this season gives us many chances to celebrate both.

I am grateful every day for the strength of our Wildcat community—our parents, families, and broader network of supporters who remind us that we do not do this work alone. Together, we will continue building the academic excellence and positive culture that our students deserve.

Let’s embrace this new season with Wildcat pride!

📢 Seeking Parent & Community Input: Campus Turnaround Plan (TAP)

Westview Middle School has received an F rating for the past three years, which requires us to submit a Turnaround Plan (TAP) to the state. It is vital that the voices of our parents, families, and community members are included in shaping this plan for the future of our Wildcats.

Please take a moment to complete the brief survey linked below to provide your input.

Additionally, if you would like to share more detailed feedback in person, we invite you to attend our CAAC/Community Meeting on Wednesday, September 10th at 5:00 p.m. in the Wildcat Library.

Parent Action Required: New Consent Forms for Student Health & Counseling Services

Texas Senate Bill 12, passed by the 89th Legislature and signed into law in June 2025, now requires parents to provide written consent for students to receive health and counseling services in schools.

This law mandates:

  • Annual consent forms for routine health, social, and mental wellness services.

  • Clarification on when additional consent or opt-out is required for other health-related services.

👉 Important: At this time, all consent forms must be completed online in Skyward. On Friday, all parents should have received both an email and a text with directions for completing this process.

Please note:

  • Students will not be able to see the school counselor or nurse without this consent in place.

  • It is imperative that all parents complete this form online as quickly as possible so that students do not experience an interruption in receiving care.

We also recognize that this process may be easier for some families than others. To support you, we will be offering:

Parent Assistance Night
📅 Wednesday
🕓 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.
📍 Westview Middle School (Come & Go)

Staff will be available to help families complete these forms onsite so that every student has access to the health and counseling services they need.

Thank you for your partnership in making sure our Wildcats are cared for both academically and personally.

Cell Phone Policy Update: Transition to Full Implementation

Since the start of the school year (August 13 – September 18), we have been in a transition period for our no-cell-phone policy. During this time, students were given progressive reminders and opportunities to adjust to the new expectations:

  • 1st Offense: Verbal reminder

  • 2nd Offense: Device confiscated and returned at the end of the day

  • 3rd Offense: Device returned only to a parent/guardian

  • Chronic Violations: Parent meeting and progressive discipline

Beginning Wednesday, September 18, we will move into full implementation of our cell phone policy. This phase will follow a stricter consequence ladder:

  • 1st Offense: Device confiscated, returned only to a parent/guardian

  • 2nd Offense: Device confiscated + lunch detention (documented in Skyward)

  • 3rd Offense: Device confiscated + half-day of ISS + parent meeting

  • Chronic Issues: May result in a full day of ISS, a behavior plan, or temporary ban of the device on campus

We ask all parents to remind your child to keep their cell phone turned off and stored in their backpack or personal belongings throughout the school day. By working together, we can ensure our students remain focused on learning without distractions.

🎟️ Student ID Badges

A reminder that all students are required to wear their ID badge every day while on campus. This important safety measure helps us ensure that everyone in the building belongs here and allows us to keep all students safe at all times.

We ask for your support in reminding your child not to leave the house without their ID badge each morning. If a student has lost their badge, they should report to the office to request a replacement. Please note that replacement ID badges cost $5.00. Please use the link below to pre-pay for a replacement ID badge.

Restroom Use During Class Time

We ask for your support in helping students value their instructional time. Restroom breaks during class should be limited to emergencies only. Each student is allotted six restroom passes per six weeks for use during class time. Students will be issued a new restroom pass through their social studies classes on Monday, September 22, 2025.

As a reminder, we have increased our passing periods to four minutes to give students more time to use the restroom between classes. Students may also use the restroom during lunch, before school, and after school.

Please encourage your student to make the most of their class time by avoiding unnecessary restroom trips during instructional periods.

Perfect Attendance Contest 🥧✨

We’re excited to share a fun new contest that began last week! All students who achieve perfect attendance between September 15 – October 13 will have their names entered into a special drawing.

The lucky winners will get the chance to put a pie in the face of the Assistant Principal of their choice—all in good fun, of course! This lighthearted event will take place during lunch and is sure to bring plenty of smiles and laughter to our Wildcats.

While the contest adds an element of fun, it also highlights the importance of being present every day. Attendance plays a big role in student success, and we appreciate your partnership in encouraging your child to be at school, on time, every day.

Let’s keep up the great attendance, and we can’t wait to see who gets to deliver the pie surprise!

Attention 8th Grade Parents: PSAT on October 22nd Attention 8th Grade Parents: PSAT on October 22nd

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

All 8th grade students at Westview Middle School will take the PSAT on October 22, 2025. This is a valuable opportunity for students to get their first exposure to a college-entrance exam, and to begin building readiness for high school and beyond.

Why the PSAT Matters for 8th Graders

According to the College Board’s PSAT 8/9 resources:

  • The PSAT 8/9 assesses reading, writing, and math skills appropriate for 8th and 9th graders. It measures the kinds of critical thinking and problem solving students are already working to build in class. BigFuture

  • It helps establish a baseline of college and career readiness. Knowing where one stands in these academic areas early allows students, parents, and teachers to see strengths and areas to improve. k12.collegeboard.org+1

  • The results also help inform instruction — meaning teachers can use the score data to support students in specific skills where they might need extra help. k12.collegeboard.org+1

  • It builds familiarity with the format of standardized tests. Taking the PSAT in 8th grade introduces students to test features like time limits, question types, test structure, which can reduce anxiety in later tests. Online SAT / ACT Prep Blog+1

What This Means for Our Students

  • No stakes, just growth: The PSAT in 8th grade is not used for college admission or scholarship qualification. Its purpose is to inform and guide.

  • Feedback for improvement: Students will receive score reports showing what they did well and what they can work on. This feedback can help guide study, help from teachers, or use of prep resources.

  • Getting a head start: Families and students can use this early feedback to plan courses, set learning goals, and become comfortable with assessment formats.

We encourage all parents and students to view this PSAT exam as a tool for growth. Help your child get enough rest, eat well, and come ready to do their best. If you have questions about how to interpret PSAT results or how to support your student, feel free to reach out to our counseling department.
