Get A Life

Hedgesville Middle will be hosting our Get A Life program for 8th grade students on Thursday, April 10th in the morning. The purpose of this program is to provide a real-life activity that will help students understand living expenditures and think about their futures and the importance of education.

Students will be given a job description, family information, monthly income and a check register. They will then visit different stations to buy the needs required to take care of their family. This includes housing, a vehicle, insurance, utilities, groceries, fuel, furniture, medical, etc... Many of these students will quickly learn that their monthly income is not enough to support a family. They will hopefully realize the importance of additional education so they can secure a better paying job.

Students will then receive education or a certification beyond the high school diploma and begin the simulation again with their net income increasing due to additional education. During the activity, the Green Reaper character may strike students at random. The reaper will give the student a card that will reflect and unexpected expenditure or windfall that happen in real life. For example: the hot water tank must be replaced, the car breaks down, etc... That amount must be subtracted or added from the students' monthly net income.

This program is sponsored by the Office of the State Treasurer.

We are looking for volunteers to assist at each of the different tables. Please complete the attached survey if you are interested in volunteering.

Thank you and please reach out to me if you have any questions.
