We wrapped up our unit - Vowel-R. In this unit, students will learned about vowel-r combinations. Vowel-r is also known as r-controlled vowels or bossy r.

Rule: Any vowel becomes a vowel-r when it is directly followed by the letter r. The resulting letter combination causes the vowel to make a different sound than typically expected. Sometimes we refer to r as “Bossy R” because the r bosses the other sound to make a new sound - spark, cork, germ, birthday, and burn. ir, er, ur make the same sound. The spelling -er is used most of the time. Try -er first to see if it looks right, if not, then try ur and ir. This week's focus in on /or/ - or and ore

This week we continued Unit 7 - Readers Use Main Idea, Details and Text Features to Better Understand Nonfiction Text

I can describe the main idea of a nonfiction text by using information I learned from text features.

Readers can use more than one text feature to learn about a topic.

Example of our thinking stem:

First I looked at the photograph.

Now I am using the caption.

I learned _________________.

First I looked at the bold (expert) word.

Now I am using the glossary.

I learned ________.

First I looked at the heading.

Now I am using the words.

I learned _____________.

Math Math

This week we will started Module 6 - Part 1: Attributes of Shapes. Our focus this week:

Introduction to fractions

I can make equal shares and look for equal parts.

I can name equal shares as whole, half and fourth.

I can partition objects into halves and fourths.

Writer's Workshop Writer's Workshop

This week we continued our Writer's Workshop Unit 6 - Fictional Narrative. A fictional narrative is a made-up story. We worked through using different transition words to put our story in order, continuing common illustration tricks throughout our story, and adding an ending to give our reader closure. I'm so excited to see what these creative writers decide to do in planning and writing their own fictional narrative starting next week.

FIRST GRADE HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS (HFW) FIRST GRADE HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS (HFW)

Below is the list of 1st grade high frequency words by quarter that students will be accountable to read and write. The first 16 words in the 1st Quarter column have already been explicitly taught, practiced and added to our sound wall. If there is a blacked out box in the write column, this means that word is not a word for writing mastery in 1st grade. Those will be assessed for mastery on reading them in 1st but writing them in 2nd grade. Working on these words would be a great way to help support your reader and writer!! 🙂
