This is our final week before Spring Break, and it is full of important events, learning opportunities, and special experiences for our students.
Students in 3rd, 5th, and 6th grades will be taking the Math portion of the Forward Exam this week. Please help set your child up for success by ensuring they arrive at school on time each day (by 9:00 a.m.), are well rested, and ready to do their very best.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, our K5 students will attend their half-day field trips to the Urban Ecology Center. Please make sure your child has a signed permission slip and the $5.00 fee submitted.
From Wednesday through Friday, our 4th grade students will participate in their annual camping trip to Camp Upham Woods—a cherished La Escuela Fratney tradition for over 20 years. We hope they have a wonderful and memorable experience!
Finally, on Friday, we invite you to join us for our third Theme Presentation. There will be two identical presentations at 10:00 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Please attend the time that works best for you. Doors will open five minutes before each presentation.
Thank you for your continued support. Let’s make it a great week!

Field Trips and Learning Journeys at La Escuela Fratney!
At La Escuela Fratney, we believe learning comes to life through hands-on experiences beyond the classroom. 🌿✨ Every student, from K4 through 6th grade, participates in meaningful field trips throughout the school year. Our students explore nature and science through annual visits to Urban Ecology Center, engage in district-supported Learning Journeys, and build a love for the arts through repeated visits to the Milwaukee Art Museum as part of the Junior Docent program. This week our K5 students will have their Urban Ecology field trip. In April our K5 students will have their Learning Journey to Oak Ridge Farm! This week our 4th graders will be going on the Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center camping trip! In addition, students experience live performances at the opera and orchestra—broadening their perspectives and deepening their understanding of the world around them. These experiences are made possible through strong community partnerships that enrich learning for every child. To learn more, visit our website and explore the MPS Learning Journeys program.
K5 Urban Ecology Field Trips This Week/Upcoming Learning Journey
All students at our school participate in both Urban Ecology field trips and Learning Journeys each year. Additional information about these opportunities can be found on our MPS Fratney website, as well as on the MPS website for Learning Journeys.
Each grade level may also plan additional field trips throughout the year. However, in recent years, transportation costs—especially bus pricing—have increased significantly. As a result, some trips that teachers would like to plan may require substantial fundraising. Additionally, planning field trips involves a considerable amount of time and coordination, and this school year has included many changes that have impacted that process.
To clarify questions about parent attendance: parents are not prohibited from attending field trips. However, each trip has different guidelines depending on factors such as location, available funding, transportation, and site-specific rules.
For example, all the Urban Ecology Field trips including the upcoming K5 Urban Ecology field trip uses small buses with very limited seating, which does not allow space for additional chaperones. Because this is a half-day trip with limited adult needs, teachers may only invite a parent if there is a specific student need requiring additional support.
Similarly, the Oak Ridge Farm Learning Journey is a required MPS field trip with strict capacity guidelines. Due to the size of the site, only two classes attend per day, and the program limits attendance to one chaperone per ten students. These limited spots are reserved for school staff, including teachers and paraprofessionals.
We appreciate your understanding, as these decisions are guided by safety, logistics, and district or site requirements. If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Restorative Practices-Staff Agreements at La Escuela Fratney
Staff Agreements at Escuela Fratney
On Thursday, December 18, 2026 the Fratney Restorative Practices Team co-facilitated and co-led their first community-building session for staff. The session focused on developing and honing community agreements, and staff worked in teams focused on describing what each agreement looked liked, sounded like and felt like for staff. The Restorative Practices Team put together each group's work, to finalize the community agreements. During the following community-building session, the staff talked through what they would need to do for these agreements to become a way of being for staff within Escuela Fratney.

Volunteers
Volunteers
Are you interested in volunteering at La Escuela Fratney? We welcome volunteers to support with arrival, lunch, and recess times. Per our school policy, families are not able to volunteer in their own child's classroom on an ongoing basis. If you are interested in volunteering in classrooms, it must be a different classroom and be organized and approved through the parent coordinator Ms. Grace.
Here is the paragraph from the MPS Family manual that describes the volunteer process:
Family Volunteers
Persons interested in volunteering are encouraged to follow the appropriate volunteer application process defined by the district. MPS defines a volunteer as a person who provides services on an ongoing or one-time basis. Persons looking to serve on an ongoing basis or for more than five hours a week or for an overnight field trip must complete an online volunteer application, pass a criminal background check (for those 18 years of age or older), and receive a volunteer assignment by the school administrator or parent coordinator. Persons looking to participate in a daytime field trip or other one-time activity must complete a volunteer waiver form. The online volunteer application and the volunteer waiver form are available on the MPS website under the Families tab > Volunteer.

There will be one calendar for the whole district again this year. Please review this calendar before making plans for trips or vacations. Students must be in school 95% of the time or more which means they can only miss 1 day a month the whole school year. Students who miss more than 10 days of school a year fall behind academically and socially. Make a plan now to be in school every day on time.
