What We Are Learning
π Reading & Literacy
In Unit 2, students will explore the essential question, βHow do artists express themselves through their artwork?β Students will read passages about art and artists, identify and explore important words, and use graphic organizers to organize their thinking and understanding. As they connect reading and writing to art, students will also have the opportunity to create their own self-portraits, using artwork as a way to express their ideas, interests, and unique identities.
Math
In math, are focused on solving addition and subtraction word problems. Students will practice using equations, bar diagrams, and different strategies to solve one- and two-step problems, including finding unknown numbers and comparing amounts.
UFLI Phonics
This week in UFLI, we are working on lessons 83 and 84. We will be working on r-controlled vowels and the vowel teams ai/ay. Students will practice recognizing these spelling patterns, reading words, and applying them when spelling and writing. Please encourage your child to practice reading words with these patterns at home!

Social Studies
This week in Social Studies, we will be learning about the 13 Colonies, including daily chores in Colonial America and what life was like for colonial children. Students will explore how children helped their families, what chores they were responsible for, and what school was like during colonial times. We will compare their experiences to our lives today and discover how life has changed over time!
Writing
Our second graders began a new writing unit all about opinion writing! Students will continue learn how to clearly share their opinions, give reasons to support their thinking, and use examples to help convince their readers. We will practice choosing topics we care about, organizing our ideas, and using strong words to express our thoughts. You can support your child at home by asking questions like, βWhat do you think about that?β or βWhy do you feel that way?β We are excited to see our young writers develop their voices and share their ideas!
