Teresa's Tidbits

The end of April we said good bye to Hope, our Administrative Assistant, with a bead party to celebrate her move to New Orleans.

May brought us a lot of testing, but most of our students are now done!

Teachers and staff enjoyed a wonderful Teacher Appreciation week!

We have lots of fun activities planned in May. Please see the calendar above or contact your child's teacher for special dates. June 3rd will be the last day of school!

Spotted in Each Grade Level

Every month we ask grade level teams to tell us something special they spotted in Gore Hall. Here are their responses!

Kindergarten: We just released our butterfly ! We discussed the butterfly life cycle. Bittersweet time to release our butterfly since we watched it from the beginning

First Grade: Students are showing more confidence with expressing their thoughts and writing in their daily journals.

Second Grade: Students helping each other carry stuff to the Friday bus.

Third Grade: Third Grade was saddened to say goodbye to Hope, but thrilled to welcome back Ms. Tina!

Fourth Grade: Students sharing and celebrating all the positive traits about themselves.

Fifth Grade: Many 5th graders sharing their wealth of knowledge and educating their peers. This month showcased Native American Presentations, as well as, inspiring Deaf/Hard of Hearing persons in the community.

Lab: Students excited about learning how to tell time.

Favorite Moments From Each Grade Level

Every month we ask grade level teams to share a favorite moment. Here are their responses!

Kindergarten: A first grader being excited about performing in Peter Pan.

First Grade: Students made a connection to a fable and a current real-life experience.

Second Grade: We did a play today. had a great teacher appreciation week with lots of love. We are learning about shapes and fractions. We are writing on HOW to story in writing.

Third Grade: Third Grade was excited to see a couple of special presentations recently: West Side Story by the Dance Troupe and Matt Gilmore, Deaf Firefighter! We also were excited to celebrate all of our accomplishments at the Honor Roll ceremony. Some students showed improvement last quarter and earned Honor Roll certificates for the first time!

Fourth Grade: Welcoming our new student!

Fifth Grade: There are just so many! We loved being able to go to UNF on our first of many field trips. Also, celebrating the student's MAP growth and Julia's last day of internship is high on our list as well.

Lab: Two students proudly showing their artwork and asking which was the better drawing...then laughing and congratulating one another when told that both drawings are very good.

Updates from Vaill Hall

Vaill Hall recently enjoyed watching the Peter Pan performance. We are so proud of all our performers for the hard work and the courage they demonstrated by stepping on stage. We are also thankful for all the effort and teamwork by all who supported our dorm to ensure our students’ success.

Students enjoyed the Alligator Farm and the personalized tour. They were able to touch and see live animals and learn about the history of the Alligator Farm. The drive through downtown Saint Augustine was scenic, lively, and beautiful and was an added benefit to the trip.

Just this week students went to a Jumbo Shrimp baseball game and we were blessed with beautiful weather.

Students showed their appreciation to their teachers by coloring fabric flags and making brownies. We love our teachers and hope they felt our appreciation for all their hard work!

We are looking forward to an outdoor movie this coming Monday and our dorm field day on May 23rd. We will have games, water balloons, and water games and bubbles.

Our continuing goal is to encourage and foster independence in our students. We continue to teach students to learn their personal information, self-care, keep a clean personal space, social skills, and how to be responsible citizens.

As we enter our final weeks this school year, we will continue to send more items home. If your students have bulky bedding, please send an additional bag for packing.

We would like to thank our Parents/Guardians for their continued support and Teamwork! Also, we wish to thank those who have donated to our clothes closet! These items are always appreciated!

Lost and Found! Lost and Found!

zoom_out_map
The weather in St. Augustine is tricky! It can be chilly in the morning, but by afternoon, the sun is shining and recess gets hot! Students often take off their jackets and sweaters, and more often than not, leave them on the playground. You can help us by making sure your child's name, or even initials, are written somewhere inside the garment. We usually check the tag to see if we can identify the owner of a lost article of clothing, so it would be a great kindness if you could put a name there for us! THANK YOU!
Did you know that we have a private DES Facebook group? In order to enhance digital security for our students and their families, we transitioned our school Facebook page to a private group, which affords us better screening and monitoring measures. If you would like to join the group, please click this link: www.facebook.com/groups/fsdbdeafelementaryschool. Our goal is to post pictures and/or updates daily.
