LEWIS ELEMENTARY NEWS
April 15th 2026
"DID YOU KNOW?"
EVERY SCHOOL DAY COUNTS. “Did you know?" Our 2026-2027 school-wide attendance goal is to have 83% of students with good or acceptable attendance. We reached this goal at the beginning of April, but we just dropped back down below 83%.
Each day your child comes to school ready to learn, they get closer to reaching end-of-year expectations. Please help us get our attendance back up to 83% so our students can reach their grade level benchmarks.

Please join in celebrating the student honorees from Lewis K-5:
- Rozlynn Alvstad

Portland Public Schools is proud to partner with the Portland Art Museum, our host for the 2026 HeART of Portland: A PPS K-12 Arts Showcase. This premier district-wide annual event kicks off with an evening of student dance, music, and theatre performances, along with the opening of a stunning student visual art exhibition featuring over 100 works.
Windows of Our Future: In addition to the 100+ works, this year’s visual arts exhibition also features a citywide collaborative student art project inspired by the theme Windows of Our Future. Drawing on the symbolism of windows – reflection, light, and new perspectives – and the newly reimagined spaces of the Portland Art Museum, students created vibrant “stained-glass” style artworks exploring identity, imagination, and the possibilities ahead. Guided by PPS visual arts educators, each piece contributes to a larger installation that brings individual visions together into a collective reflection of our community’s future.

Birdie's Place
Birdie’s Place Awarded Prestigious Grant
"The Birdie’s Place Committee is thrilled to announce that it has secured a generous grant of over $5,000 from the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, bringing Lewis Elementary one step closer to our goal of building the Birdie’s Place Memorial Playground. This funding marks a significant milestone in the committee’s ongoing efforts to create a lasting tribute to Birdie and the community’s resilience and spirit. With momentum growing, the committee is actively seeking additional sponsors and volunteers to help turn this dream into a reality. Those interested in supporting this worthy cause are encouraged to get involved and contribute to the vision of a playground that will benefit generations to come.

School Dance
It was quite the Spring Swing! So many Lewis students and families came together on Friday to limbo, boogie, strike a pose and eat some snacks! This event wouldn't have been possible without the hard work of the dance committee: Bethany Austin, Nicole Koffler, Kristine Simpson, Kristin Weber and chair Allison Bendixen. Allison leads with such calm and from the outside it looks like the dance came together effortlessly with such fun details, like a photo booth (!) - all of which takes a good deal of effort. Thank you! A shout out to our day of volunteers who transformed the gym and set the mood!
Calling All Lewis Artists
TODAY, April 15 is the last day to hand in your one of a kind bird art to the front office!
It’s time to let our students' creativity take flight! As part of the Lewis Spring Soiree & Auction on May 1st, we are hosting a special "Feathered Friends" art gallery.
We are inviting all students to submit avian-inspired artwork—whether it’s a hummingbird,
a heron, or an abstract bird of paradise!
Important Details for Submissions:
● At-Home Project: To respect teachers' valuable instructional time, we are not asking for
this art to be created in the classroom. We want this to be a creative activity
students enjoy at home with their families.
● The Prize: One artist’s piece from every grade level will be selected to exhibit their
work alongside our featured local artist, Anisa Makhoul.
● The Auction: Every piece of art submitted will be available for purchase at the
auction to help raise funds for our school!
● Labeling: Please ensure every submission clearly includes the Student’s Name,
Grade, and the Title of the artwork on the back. Artwork is being collected by the front
office. Thank you Nicole and Tracey!
● Deadline: All submissions are due to the front office by April 15.
We can’t wait to see the incredible talent our students bring to this exhibit.
