Dear Wiggin Street Families,

What a wonderful week we had at Wiggin Street! Thank you to everyone who joined us for Family Literacy Night on Thursday. Troy Cummings was an amazing presenter who truly connected with our students. Classrooms were filled with engaging literacy activities, and it was so nice to see families enjoying them together. We also heard from many parents how much they appreciated the peaceful atmosphere in the gym, transformed into Camp Read-a-Lot, where families could read under the stars. We are also grateful to the food trucks Pit Stop Express, Hello Lemon, and especially Buddy Eats for joining us and helping out at the last minute.

This is our final week before Spring Break. Our 5th Grade Battle of the Books Team will compete on Tuesday, March 24, at 6:00 p.m. in the MVHS Theater. Everyone is welcome to attend, and we especially encourage interested 3rd and 4th grade students to come and learn more about the competition.

If your child was selected in February for our Wiggin Street Awards Luncheon in collaboration with Kenyon, please note that it has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 25. We look forward to traveling to The Annex for this special event.

Lastly, our 3rd quarter PBIS reward will take place this Friday. Students who have earned 50 PBIS points and have had no major referrals will visit the Skydome Mobile Ed Planetarium. We are so proud of these students for demonstrating positive behavior and showing respect for themselves, others, and our school environment.

Best wishes,
Christy Grandstaff

Battle of the Books Competition @ 6:00 pm on Tuesday, March 24th @ MVHS Theater Battle of the Books Competition @ 6:00 pm on Tuesday, March 24th @ MVHS Theater

Our 5th Grade Battle of the Books Team has dedicated months of preparation for this week’s competition. The team met weekly and, more recently, increased their commitment by meeting twice a week during lunch and recess with their coaches, Mrs. Stetler and Mrs. Eilbacher.

Battle of the Books is an annual event that brings together teams of 5–10 fifth-grade students from schools across Knox County and surrounding areas for a friendly and engaging reading competition. Participants read from a list of 70 books and are asked detailed questions, earning points by correctly identifying the book titles and/or authors.

Last week, the team participated in a practice scrimmage in front of their peers in grades 3–5. The team was divided into two groups that competed against one another, providing students with the opportunity to practice using microphones and speaking in front of an audience.

The team roster is as follows: Anna Reese Glandon (Captain), Olive Miller (Team Coach), Ellis Bartal, Emmy White, Azriel Tinch, AJ Holzer, Piper Schirtzinger, Mary Jo Camillus, Nory Wright, Keely Booth, and Bonnie Weikel.

We are incredibly proud of our students’ hard work, perseverance, and love of reading as they represent Wiggin Street in this exciting event.

2026-27 Class Lists and Teacher Requests

Creating class lists is a thoughtful process that involves many factors. Our teachers meet with the next grade level team and other staff members who work closely with students to ensure that classes are balanced. Academic needs, social-emotional needs, and peer dynamics are just a few of the considerations used in this process. This work also continues throughout the summer as we become aware of new enrollments. For these reasons, we believe it is best to wait until August to share final class lists.

If you have an educational reason for requesting a teacher, please submit your request in writing by email to me at cgrandstaff@mvcsd.us no later than May 1, 2026. Also, if you know that your child will not be attending Wiggin Street next year, please let us know as soon as possible.

Tennis Coaches Needed Tennis Coaches Needed

Mr. Steve Tier is working to start an After School Tennis Club for students in grades 3–5 at Wiggin Street and other elementary schools. If you are interested in coaching or assisting, please contact him at stier@mvcsd.us.

Ideally, volunteers would have a child in third, fourth, or fifth grade, unless they are interested in coaching students above their own child’s grade level. Thank you for considering!

Grades 3-5 Spring Ohio State Tests Grades 3-5 Spring Ohio State Tests

Students in grades 3–5 will be taking the Ohio State Tests in April. Detailed testing dates are listed below. Please make every effort to schedule appointments around these dates, as it can be challenging to complete all make-up testing when there are multiple absences.

How Families Can Help at Home

Support strong routines

  • Ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep, especially before testing days
  • Provide a healthy breakfast each morning
  • Arrive at school on time to avoid feeling rushed

Build confidence with simple practice

  • Encourage daily reading (books, articles, or even directions/recipes)
  • Have your child explain what they read to build comprehension
  • Practice basic math facts and problem-solving in real-life situations

Practice test-taking strategies

  • Remind your child to read directions carefully
  • Encourage them to take their time and check their work
  • If they get stuck, skip the question and come back to it later
  • Use strategies like eliminating wrong answers to make the best choice

Promote a positive mindset

  • Reassure your child to simply do their best
  • Remind them that it’s okay if something feels challenging
  • Encourage effort over perfection

Limit stress

  • Keep evenings calm and routines consistent during testing weeks
  • Avoid overscheduling activities on testing days
