How to Help at Home:

Students should be reading at home every night.

Have students practice rereading books that they are familiar with to practice fluency, reading rate, and reading with expression.

Practice word problems at home!

examples: "We have five apples and two bananas, how many pieces of fruit do we have in all?"

Take your students to the store and practice word problems as you shop!

Practice identifying the tens and ones in 2 digit numbers!

Practice skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25!

Go over high frequency words with your students like:

the, I, a, said, to, do, of, see, he, be, me, from, look, book, are, was, you, what, have, your, want, no, go, so, goes, says, she, we, talk, walk, were, could, would, should, or, for.

Talk about different character traits and how different people around them show these character traits

(fairness, respect for others, respect for the environment, courage, equality, tolerance, perseverance, and commitment) to connect with our Social Studies unit on Historical Figures.

From our ESOL:

Reading at home is so important to help your child learn. Reading in your native language is just as important as reading in English.

Please read the following article on how reading in your native language helps your child actually become a better reader.

From Our Reading Specialist

Hello Park Street Families,

It’s Ms. Flanagin, 1st grade reading specialist. This is a reminder to set aside a time each night to read and talk with your child. Did you know sharing stories from your childhood is a great way to introduce them to new vocabulary and build their background knowledge?

Storytelling is fun, but it can also help kids learn to read, and kids enjoy hearing real tales from a parent’s life. This video tells why beginning readers love to hear stories about a parent’s childhood. A parent’s stories help children learn new vocabulary, story structure, and comprehension. Enjoy this special time with your child!

Fact Fluency: It is crucial for students to be able to add and subtract fluently within 10 using a variety of strategies. Using dice and playing cards (remove the face cards) are fun tools to use for addition and subtraction. Below are a few creative and fun ways for your child to practice their fact fluency.
