What is a School-Family Compact?
A School-Family Compact is an agreement that parents, students, and teachers jointly develop. It explains how parents and teachers will work together to improve student academic achievement.
· Link to goals of the School Plan.
· Focus on student learning skills.
· Share strategies and responsibility of helping students meet or exceed state, district, and school academic goals.
· Explain how teachers and parents will communicate about student progress.
· Describe opportunities for parents to volunteer and participate in the school.
Jointly Developed
The faculty & staff of Holcomb Bridge Middle School worked together with parents and students. The School-Family Compact is developed through collected input on the Parent Input Survey (last collected March 2026). Information is also gathered throughout the year: school-wide surveys, Annual Family Engagement Survey, emails from teachers, parent conferences and HBMS Parent Workshops.
The School-Family Compact is updated every year to include parents, students, teachers, and staff members’ input. Comments and suggestions are always welcome any time of the year from parents, students, teachers, and staff.

School Goals 2026-27
By May 2027, HBMS will increase the percentage of students in grades 6-8 performing on or above grade level in reading by at least 5%, as measured by the Georgia Milestones reading indicator.
Focus Areas for Reading: Use critical reading strategies for students to be able to read a variety of texts with comprehension and understanding of vocabulary in context.
Responsibilities for Teachers, Students, and Parents: Together for Success
Our School Literacy Goal
By May 2027, HBMS will increase the number of students reading on or above grade level by at least 5%, based on the Georgia Milestones assessment.
Why This Matters
Strong reading skills are the foundation for success in every subject—not just ELA. When students can:
- Understand what they read
- Figure out new words
- Explain their thinking with evidence
They are better prepared for high school, college, and future careers.
At HBMS, we are focusing on helping students become critical readers—students who don’t just read but think deeply about what they read.
Across all grades (6–8), we are focusing on three key habits:
✅ Understanding new words in context
✅ Rereading and thinking deeply about texts
✅ Supporting ideas with evidence from the text
You can support this work at home in simple, powerful ways!
When teachers teach, students practice, and families reinforce at home, we create a strong support system that helps every child grow as a reader. Together, we can ensure all HBMS students become confident, capable readers ready for future success.
Daily At-Home Reading Goal:
✅ 20 minutes of reading each day
✅ Mix of stories, articles, and informational texts
✅ Talk about reading like a conversation—not a quiz!
School/Teacher Responsibilities
- Provide Monthly Family Reading Toolkits
Send home short passages with guiding questions (inference, main idea, vocabulary in context), a simple reading strategy (annotate, summarize, question), and a brief parent guide on how to support without giving answers.
- Share Mini Learning Videos for Families
Provide short (5–10 minute) recorded videos from instructional coaches and literacy teachers showing how students break down texts and use vocabulary strategies like context clues and word parts.
- Send a Weekly “Word of the Week” Communication
Share a vocabulary word in context and 2–3 discussion questions.
Student Responsibilities
- Use Reading Strategies Consistently
Apply strategies (annotating, summarizing, questioning) when reading at school and at home.
- Participate in Monthly Reading Practice
