The Buzz from Roxbury Village School

March 27, 2023 March 27, 2023

We are days away from our One Book One School celebration! Please come to school this Thursday, March 30th from 5:00-6:00 to see student work about Humphrey, play trivia based on the book, and to come together as a school community in this culminating event.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone this Friday for Caregiver Conferences. If you haven't had a chance to set up a time to meet with your student's teacher, please reach out. Due to conferences, there is no school for students this Friday. They are welcome to come to conferences, though!

Teachers have been busy collecting data and student work to not only share at conferences but to inform our work as a school. As you know, our WIN block provides interventions for all of our students based on what their needs are as learners. Our staff met today to celebrate the academic gains we've seen since we began this work together. We look forward to celebrating your student's growth during conferences later this week.

News from Kindergarten

Well we started talking and learning a lot about weather and water this week. That's what the books on the shelves are all about, except a few social emotional ones. We talked about the water cycle, how to measure the different aspects of the weather and water (which we are doing in class), we created a stream table, and opened a creative play weather station. This was in addition to reading Humphrey, sounding out words in reading, reviewing heartwords, writing stories, doing addition, counting on, number partners of 10, talking about teamwork, feelings and checking our bodies for listening and learning! That all ended with some predictions and data collection in the Forest! Phew what a busy week!

News from Grades 3/4

In the 3rd and 4th grade classroom, we are midway through our Social Issues unit. We just recently wrapped up a lesson on "One Green Apple" and have identified complex social issues such as gender, race, inclusion. We had a rich discussion on how these issues play out in the story and how they may relate to issues we've experienced or seen in our own lives. Students are applying this work to their Book Club books as they work on comprehension strategies that help them prepare for and contribute ideas to book discussion groups. We have also been doing some progress monitoring in spelling and in reading benchmarks. Updates on this to come during caregiver conferences on Friday, March 31st!

Act 1

Vermont Act 1 was signed into law in March of 2009 with the goal of improving Vermont’s sexual abuse response system. It includes several mandates for Vermont schools, including educating children about sexual abuse. To fulfill the requirements of the law, upcoming guidance lessons for our RVS students will include sexual abuse prevention education that is both age and developmentally appropriate. Please read the Act 1 Letter for more information and feel free to reach out with any questions or comments.

Fresh Fruits & Vegetables

Roxbury Village School has been awarded fresh fruit and vegetable funds for this school year. This allows us to offer fresh fruits and vegetables during snack time. It is our hope to provide a wide variety of produce that may be less familiar to our students with a goal of helping them build lifelong healthy eating habits. Recently, students were served fresh blackberries. Ms. Marion delivers them just before snacktime for everyone to enjoy.

Collecting Sap

As mentioned previously, our Bridges students have tapped a few trees at RVS and are collecting sap.

Boiling the Sap

Ms. Kelly has been helping students collect sap and prepare it to be boiled down into syrup.

Enjoying the Syrup

Students are learning that it takes a lot of sap and a lot of time for it to become the maple syrup they all love and enjoy.

Grade 4 Transition to MSMS

Our 4th grade students enjoyed spending time with students from Union Elementary School and Main Street Middle School (along with support from our MRPS Director of Social Emotional Learning and the Program Director from Up for Learning). RVS and UES students were paired up and partnered with a mentor student from MSMS. Julie Conrad, the Principal of Main Street Middle School was here as well to introduce herself and to get to know the students. Everyone spent time learning more about one another, talking about feelings they had as they prepare to to to the middle school, and asking some really good questions about life as a middle schooler. We have another session planned for April when our RVS students will travel to Union Elementary School to extend this shared experience.

Turn and Talk

There was a lot of opportunity for students to learn from and talk with one another.

REMINDER -- One Book One School!

disWe hope our entire school community is enjoying our One Book One School book, "The World According to Humphrey". Every student/family should have a copy of the book. As a reminder, there are weekly "assignments" for the chapter readings and optional at home activities. Happy Reading, Everyone!

We look forward to celebrating the book with everyone at school on Thursday, March 30th from 5:00-6:00.
