Ecosystem Projects
Mary Purcell sixth-graders showcase Ecosystem Projects
Students in Elise Roberson’s sixth-grade class at Mary Purcell Elementary School spent the week presenting their Ecosystem Projects, showcasing their knowledge of various ecological systems.
During the presentations, classmates were tasked with writing down at least three interesting facts from each project. This interactive approach kept students engaged and attentive throughout the sessions. Roberson set a high bar for her students, often asking clarifying questions to push their understanding further. After each presentation, the speakers fielded questions from their classmates, demonstrating their grasp of the material.
The goal of the project was for students to present their knowledge of a specific ecosystem of their choice. Presenters were required to follow a detailed rubric, ensuring comprehensive and thoughtful presentations.
Each project had to include:
- A map pinpointing the location of the chosen ecosystem
- General information about the ecosystem
- A list of at least 15 organisms found within the ecosystem
- A chart categorizing these organisms by food type, such as carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, producers, consumers, decomposers, or scavengers
- A table or chart detailing as many abiotic and biotic factors as possible
- An illustrated food web with at least seven elements, arranged by energy roles from decomposers at the base to top-level consumers
Additionally, students were required to select one organism from their ecosystem to highlight. They described the organism’s habitat, population numbers, and food sources, explaining why they chose it as their favorite.
The project aimed to deepen students' understanding of ecosystems while fostering presentation and critical thinking skills.
Jacob, a sixth student at Mary Purcell, selected cherry blossom forests as his ecosystem.
Drake, another sixth grader at Mary Purcell, selected the Hoh Rainforest as his ecosystem.

**Please note that most youth sports are run by volunteer boards of directors. Coaches are most often fellow parents and there is a significant referee shortage amongst almost every sport. Volunteering to coach or training to become a referee is one of the best opportunities a parent or guardian has to stay involved in their child's life through various stages of development!

Reporting Harassment, Intimidation or Bullying
The district uses a reporting system for harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) through SafeSchools Alert. Students, parents and community members can report HIB and other unsafe behaviors anonymously through phone, text, email or web. Students, parents and community members should utilize SafeSchools Alert as it creates a record of the report, and each incident must be investigated. Visit https://swsd-wa.safeschoolsalert.com/ to report an incident or use the alternative methods below.
