Ecosystem Projects Ecosystem Projects

Mary Purcell sixth-graders showcase Ecosystem Projects

Students in Elise Roberson’s sixth-grade class at Mary Purcell Elementary School spent the week presenting their Ecosystem Projects, showcasing their knowledge of various ecological systems.

During the presentations, classmates were tasked with writing down at least three interesting facts from each project. This interactive approach kept students engaged and attentive throughout the sessions. Roberson set a high bar for her students, often asking clarifying questions to push their understanding further. After each presentation, the speakers fielded questions from their classmates, demonstrating their grasp of the material.

The goal of the project was for students to present their knowledge of a specific ecosystem of their choice. Presenters were required to follow a detailed rubric, ensuring comprehensive and thoughtful presentations.

Each project had to include:

  • A map pinpointing the location of the chosen ecosystem
  • General information about the ecosystem
  • A list of at least 15 organisms found within the ecosystem
  • A chart categorizing these organisms by food type, such as carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, producers, consumers, decomposers, or scavengers
  • A table or chart detailing as many abiotic and biotic factors as possible
  • An illustrated food web with at least seven elements, arranged by energy roles from decomposers at the base to top-level consumers

Additionally, students were required to select one organism from their ecosystem to highlight. They described the organism’s habitat, population numbers, and food sources, explaining why they chose it as their favorite.

The project aimed to deepen students' understanding of ecosystems while fostering presentation and critical thinking skills.

HiCap Program receives microgrant for creative writing and animation

The Sedro-Woolley School District’s Highly Capable (HiCap) program is expanding opportunities for student learning through a new Creative Writing for Animation microgrant. Tim Gjefle, the district’s HiCap Coordinator, and HiCap teacher Elli Gildness collaborated to secure the grant, which will enhance the district’s elementary HiCap curriculum.

Through this microgrant, students in the HiCap program will have free access to StoryMaker Lite for one year. StoryMaker Lite is a digital platform that enables students to write, record, and create personalized animations using classroom computers. The program integrates project-based learning across subjects like English, history, science, and social studies, offering a hands-on approach to developing skills in storytelling and animation.

The grant includes access to 250,000 animation assets, as well as project-based learning lesson plans and tutorials. These resources will guide students and teachers through the entire animation process, from brainstorming to production. Additionally, professional development from the StoryMaker team and support from EdTech experts will help ensure successful implementation.

Cascade Middle School will host its annual Turkey Trot on November 27th at 9:50 a.m.

A Turkey Trot is a fun run or walk event traditionally held around Thanksgiving, often on or just before Thanksgiving Day. The term "Turkey Trot" comes from the holiday's association with turkeys.

At Cascade Middle School, the Turkey Trot is a longstanding tradition for seventh and eighth graders and school staff. Taking place the day before Thanksgiving, the students and staff run from the school's parking lot near Township Street/McGarigle Road to the intersection of McGarigle Road/Fruitdale Road and back. It’s a festive event with a school band playing at the start and finish lines. The Turkey Trot provides an opportunity for the school community to celebrate the holiday spirit.

Please note that CEP allows the service of one free breakfast and one free lunch meal daily. If students wish to have more than one meal per day, they will need to have money added to their food service account online or in the school office and will be charged accordingly. In addition, milk is an a la carte item. When taken by itself, the charge is $0.60. Volunteering to coach or training to become a referee is one of the best opportunities a parent or guardian has to stay involved in their child's life through various stages of development!
