Celebrate National School Library Month by Reading!

There are all kinds of fun ways to celebrate National School Library Month, but what better way to celebrate than to read!

  • Host a book tasting
  • Plan a school-wide book challenge (K-5 Beanstack Love Your Library challenge is live!)
  • Hand out a mini-book challenge.
  • See who can read the most minutes in Beanstack (log in via Clever).
  • Students can write book reviews and even create book trailers both of which can be shared in Destiny, our online catalog.
  • Host a maker night, libraries are maker hubs!
  • Host a book swap.
  • Create a "Student Picks" display.
  • Host a poster context or a book cover redesign.

*If you haven't connected your students with Beanstack, now is the time! Get them familiar with it so they're ready and rarin' for our summer reading challenge!

Share your library love!

April 5th is National Library Worker's Day!

Modern-day school libraries are pretty amazing places! Though they still offer the latest and greatest, diverse, culturally responsive collections filled with high-interest books, they can be hubs for creation, collaboration, and innovation.

Certified teacher-librarians specialize in technology integration, information literacy, digital citizenship, reading advocacy, and provide support and resources for classroom instruction. Our four high school teacher-librarians provide support to teachers by teaching information literacy and digital citizenship lessons, promoting reading, and creating welcoming spaces where students can investigate, create, collaborate, as well as find the perfect book.

K-8 classified library managers create welcoming spaces for students to check out books. They ensure books are returned, shelved, and the library space is neat and tidy for teachers as they bring classes for check out. Some are evening creating makerspaces!

Check out all our 4J library staff below.

Let's celebrate School Library Month this April! Share what you love about your school library and make your teacher-librarian's or library manager's day when you share it with them! Print out the form here, give it to your library staff so they feel appreciated, or share it with us on social media.

There are Edison Robots, Ozobots, Bloxels, and Microbits! This website is filled with resources to get teachers up and running and also has a form at the top so teachers can reserve kits with ease.

Writing Inspiration

Need some ideas for authentic writing this spring? Students can write stories about an animal up for adoption at the Greenhill Humane Society to help them get adopted. With a bit of research, they can learn about an animal, write their story, draw a picture, and we can share it with Greenhill. Reach out to Amy Page if you're interested.

Tour the Eugene Public Library

Teachers can arrange for their class to visit the Eugene Public Library in person or virtually. While there, a librarian will give a tour, answer questions, show students how to get their library cards, and read. Most importantly, it provides an opportunity for all your students to learn about the awesome resources and programs available.

Contact Amy Forrester (aforrester@eugene-or.org) or Heather Sears (hsears@eugene-or.gov) if you would like to arrange a tour.

๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸNew Comics Unlimited in Sora๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

Over 1,700 unlimited, simultaneous access comic books are now available in Sora! Marvel, Mine Craft, Star Wars, Avatar, Disney and so many more are available all the time, no holds necessary! Help get students connected by taking a moment to show them how to log in to Sora (watch this video for a quick reminder - iPads have an app). Don't have time to learn? Invite Amy Page to your class and she'll get students connected and help you learn at the same time.

"What to Read Next"

For students that get stuck on what to read next after reading a fabulous book or are traumatized by reading a horrible book, Eugene Public Library youth services offers a cool tool to help. Their "What to Read Next" form, is easy to fill out and is shared with youth librarian experts that will provide a list of books based on interests, age, book type, favorite authors and previous titles enjoyed. It's a great resource for any reader! Check it out here.
