From the Principal's Desk:

Dear Salisbury Families:

I hope you are all well today!

As the leaves hang on, and both 70 degrees and potential snow are in the forecast (ahh, Vermont in 2023), thoughts for many of our students turn toward Halloween. We know how beloved Halloween is for so many. The dressing up, trick-or-treating, and getting to eat more junk food than you probably should: kids have a great time.

Halloween is a bit tricky for schools, for two reasons. One is that some do view it as a religious holiday (although for many I know it's just about dressing up and having candy), and the second reason is that it actually can be pretty disruptive for class, as costumes are pretty distracting for kids (especially when they try to "borrow" parts of them from each other) and a lot of candy being sent in can be distracting as well- especially when students start trading, etc.

With these concerns in mind, we ask that students do NOT wear costumes to school that day, or bring in candy or treats to share. We are super excited that students can come to school on Saturday for Trunk-or-Treat (see below), and we hope that can be a great way to combine Halloween and Salisbury School a little if they want to. If students would like to dress up to make the day itself feel special, maybe they can wear some black and orange, or some other fall colors on the 31st!

You might very well have some questions about this- please reach out if you do! Always happy to chat.

Enjoy the weekend! Please consider coming to the SVFD Lasagna Dinner and Trunk-or-Treat!

Best,

Bjarki

Lions Daiper Drive! Drop-off at SCS

The Lions Club of Middlebury is having a diaper drive for the month of October. All diapers collected are going to the Addison County Parent-Child Center. The Middlebury Lions are doing this along with all 34 Lions Clubs throughout Vermont. The effort is to help offset the 70% reduction in funding to the Vermont Diaper Bank. The Diaper Bank exists to help provide diapers to economically challenged young families.

You may drop diaper donations off at Salisbury Community School, and we will transfer them to the Lions Club. We will weigh the diapers, and announce the total weight in a future newsletter. Then, next year, we'll try to beat that number!

Throwing and Catching in PE!

During this month in Physical Education the students developed the skill of throwing and catching. Through fun games like battleship, trash the neighbors yard, and hula hut castle the students had the chance to work on their form and accuracy while throwing. To develop the skill of catching we had the opportunity to play hero and villain freeze tag, boom city and ring collector. Ask your student which game was their favorite!- Miss. T.

5th grade and Kindergarten buddies!

Continuing a fun SCS tradition, our 5th graders and Kindergarteners spend time together as "buddies". It's a really valuable time for both classes, and it's truly impressive how our 5th graders step up to be great helpers and role models for the Kindergarteners, and it's awesome how much our Kindergartens look up to their 5th grade buddies!
